Bulls guard Alex Caruso receives vote for best defender in NBA

The Chicago Bulls haven’t had the postseason success that many wanted to see them have over the past two seasons, but they still have a ton of talent on the roster. Obviously, their Big 3 is made up of All-Stars, but they also have some solid role players, led by defensive-minded guard Alex Caruso.

Caruso joined the Bulls two summers ago, the same offseason that they brought in DeMar DeRozan and Lonzo Ball. His statistical numbers weren’t too impressive this past year, but he capped off the season with an All-Defensive First-Team nod. He’s regarded as one of the best defenders in the league, and GMs around the NBA agree.

In the 2023-24 NBA GM Survey, written up by John Schuhmann of NBA.com, Caruso received a vote for the best defender in the NBA, as well as 10% of the votes for the best perimeter defender in the NBA.

Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo won the vote for the best defender in the NBA, receiving 40% of the votes. He was followed by Jrue Holiday (13%), Draymond Green (10%), Marcus Smart (10%), Jaren Jackson Jr. (7%), and Kawhi Leonard (7%).

Caruso was among the “others receiving votes,” with Anthony Davis and Lu Dort joining him in that distinction.

As far as perimeter defenders go, Holiday was voted the best, getting 50% of the votes. He was followed by Mikal Bridges (13%), Caruso (10%), Smart (10%), and Leonard (7%). Jimmy Butler, Dort, and Jayson Tatum also got votes in the question.

Caruso will likely be Zach LaVine’s backup this season, but his impact is undeniable and he will be a crucial part of the Bulls’ rotation.
