Title: Soldiers wearing uniforms and police wearing riot gear march to Zip to Zap confrontation, Zap (N.D.)
Date: 05/10/1969
Creator: Peters, James
Summary: Soldiers wearing uniforms and police wearing riot gear march past bar displaying Hamm's Beer sign and trailer selling Beer and Dogs and a home in Zap, N.D. Soldiers are holding bayoneted rifles at ready and the police have batons over their shoulders.||The Zip to Zap started as an article published in the North Dakota State University student paper The Spectrum, and suggested tiny Zap, N.D. could become the Fort Lauderdale of the North. Zap town leaders were initially welcoming, and the story was picked up nationally. The National Guard was alerted and advised to report to Zap for weekend duty between May 9-11, 1969. 3000 college students descended on the town. The town's supply of beer, food, and other consumables was rapidly depleted, and cold temperatures led students to setting a bonfire in one of the Zap city streets. As local law enforcement could not handle the students, the North Dakota National Guard, using fixed bayonets, moved the students out of town. Damage from the Zip to Zap totalled over $25,000, and a cafe and bar were totally destroyed. The student governments of NDSU and UND ultimately paid the bills for damages.
