Drosanthemum bicolor - Tweekleurporseleinbos, Bicoloured vygie
.
Common name: Tweekleurporseleinbos, Bicoloured vygie
Family: Aizoaceae (Vygie)
Distribution: Little Karoo, South Africa
National red list: Data Deficient - Taxonomically Problematic
Comments: The flowers open only on warm, sunny days and close in the evening. Seed dispersal is triggered by rain (moisture) opening the seed capsules. The raindrops wash the seeds out of the capsule. This mechanism promotes the survival of the seeds. The seed is washed away from the parent plant and may grow under the protection of a nurse plant, a shrub that shelters the seedlings from the sun's damaging rays.
