More Garway Hill   12 comments

Whilst my local mountains in Wales have been closed off, Garway Hill became my release valve for a high level walk and views to keep me sane.

This one was taken after dropping TJF in town for a socially distanced meet up in the park with one of her friends. We thought we could grab a walk in between drop off and pick up.

Another day with heavy showers forecast but we were lucky again and avoided a soaking even though there were clearly damps spells about. We even managed a cheeky summit beer – a very nice Brewdog Lock-Down Lager!

More bracken starting to rear its head.

Some of the paths I use on this walk will shortly disappear until winter when it dies back.

We had time to take the longer route, down the ridge, back along the lane and cutting back across the fields to the open common land.

An enjoyable if short walk.

Next day I was on my own while the rest of family visited my Mum-in-Law. I took a long ride out to see if could cycle all the way to the top of a local hill (a missing Marilyn) called Burton Hill.

I managed it with some stiles to haul the bike over and few interesting moments on a muddy path riding on slick tyres. The photo below gives flavour of what trying to find summits in these out of the way places can be like! Steep hard work on the way up but a fabulous long downhill ride back down!

  1. Good old Garway Hill.
I like the sounds of the downhill part on Burton Hill!

    • It will be Bracken Hill before too much longer but its a great spot – another one for the book.
Burton Hill won’t be in the book – just a hidden trig point in a dark forest but needs must when bagging. Long 300m climb to the top, very fast 300m ride back down!

  2. Great walk. We are both having it very easy though. Must be very hard having young children over the past few months, trying to keep everyone entertained and happy, especially if you live in flats, tenements, or city accommodation without many local parks or even green spaces to visit. Computers and internet games/past times must be a godsend then. A bit like going back to the 1960s/1970s in some ways when all you really had was music and films to keep you entertained.

    • Absolutely, its been easy for us to cope although the disruption to my kids education is bit tough, especially my daughter who is doing a performing arts course so has lost an entire term of work and performances as its not something you can still do remotely. She was loving the course and in way its her only chance to take this sort of course while still based at home. Aside from that we have a garden and lots of local open space to exercise and stay fit. As a rural county we feel quite detached from the overall situation. I can’t imagine how hard it must be for a young family living in a flat in large town or city.

  3. I like your idea of a summit beer! 🙂 Good that you have these lovely hills to walk during the quarantine.

  4. Lovely rural photos and bike ride. I love the image where the bike is on its side underneath the cooling, green canopy of trees. Do I spy foxgloves amongst the bracken?

    • The hill I cycled up wasn’t one of the best to be honest. I’m ticking off a list of hills and this is near to home and looked like I might be able to cycle up it which I could (with a few stiles and slippery mud adventures). I enjoyed the long ride back down though 🙂

  5. It seems lately as though we have gone back to dodging the heavy rain, a bit like it was in March before the lockdown. Still that local hill has some great views

    • To be honest I prefer the showery weather to that 30C muggy stuff when it was too hot to do anything. Got lucky yesterday, my parents came over to see us for a socially distanced afternoon in the garden. Showery and threatening looking all day until they turned up when the skies immediately cleared to wall to wall blue 🙂
