Description Perennial herbs. Roots, thick yellow. Stems erect, 0.6-1m tall. Basal leaves large, oblong, 10-25cm long, 4-10cm wide, apex acute, base rounded or cordate, edges wavy; stem leaves small, narrowly oblong; sheath membranous, fragile. Raceme apical, each section of flower clusters slightly drooping; tepals 6, light green; 3 of the outer layer oval, 3 of the inner layer become pericarp expands when fruiting. Pericarp widely oval, clear reticular pattern, edge irregular small teeth, each with long oval nodules on the back; stamens 6, three pairs; ovary ribbed with 1 chamber, 1 ovule, 3 styles, slightly cracked stigma. Achenes broadly-ovate, pointed on both ends, with three sharp angular ribs, about 2mm long, dark brown, shiny. Flowering: April. Fruiting: May.
Distribution Growing on mountains, roadsides or wetlands. Can be cultivated. Distributed in the northeast, north, east, central and southern parts. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces.
Part Used Medical parts: roots. Chinese name: Yangti.
Harvest & Processing After two years of cultivating, when the leaves turn yellow in autumn, the roots can be excavated; washed, used fresh or dried after sliced.
Chemistry Contains chrysophanic acid, emodin and so on.
Pharmacology The root decoction, in vitro, shows different degrees of inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus anthracis, beta-hemolytic streptococci and diphtheria bacilli.
Properties & Actions Bitter, cold.Clearing heat to relax the bowels, blood-cooling and haemostatic, worms-killing and itch-relieving.
Indications & Usage Used for constipation, stranguria with turbid urine, jaundice, hematemesis, hemorrhoidal hamorrhage, uterine bleeding dysfunctional, favus, sarcoptidosis, anthracia, injuries from falls.Oral administration: decocting, 9-15g; pounded to extract juice or prepared ointment. External application: smashed for applying, smashed to extract juice or decocted for washing.
Examples 1. Jaundice with damp-heat pathogen: Japan Dock root 15g, cortex acanthopanacis 15g. Decoct in water and swallow.
2. Heat accumulation and hematemesis: Japan Dock root and tuber of dwarf lilyturf, decoct and drink, or stew paste. Prepare honey pills and swallow with a few spoonfuls of plain soup.
