Description Perennial herb without stem. Leaf base fasciate, usually 4, radially stretching, circular or kidney shaped, 6-13cm long, 6-12cm wide, basal part shallow heart shaped, with crenations, upper surface wrinkled, densely covered by white soft hairs, lower surface sparsely covered by soft hairs along the veins, leaf vein fan shaped, petiole broad and flat, slightly embracing stem. Verticillaster head shaped, spicate, 3.5-7cm long; bract filamentous, tip lanceolate; calyx tubular, purplish green, about 8mm long, with 10 veins, calyx teeth 5, broadly triangular, covered by thick hard hairs, with long sharp spines; corolla labiate, light purplish red, covered by soft hairs, upper lip nearly round, margin with tooth, lower lip 3 lobed, middle lobe comparatively big; stamens 4, anterior pair slightly long, anther with 2 ventricles, tip joined, divergent; ovary hairless, stigma 2 shallowly lobed. Nutlet light brown, invert ovate prismatoidal, embraced in persistent calyx, hairless. Flowering: June to July, fruiting: August to September.
Distribution Growing on plateau at altitude 2,700-4,500m or highly weathering detritus beaches on alps or meadow of rock alps or river beaches. Distributed in Gansu, Qinghai, Sichuan, Yunnan, Tibet and etc. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Gansu, Qinghai, Sichuan, Yunnan, Tibet and etc.
Part Used Medical part: whole plant. Chinese name: Duyiwei.
Harvest & Processing Excavated from Sept-Oct, to use roots and rhizome, cut leaves and fibril, and sun-dried. To use whole plant, removed sediment, sundried and chopped into segments.
Chemistry Mainly contains luteolin, quercetin, apigenin and its glycosides.
Pharmacology Immunity-enhancing, pain-killing, hemostatic, and anti-bacterial.
Properties & Actions Sweet, pungent, neutral.Promoting blood circulation and eliminating stasis, detumescence for suppressing pains.
Indications & Usage Injuries from fall, pains of bones and muscles, swelling pain of joints, algomenorrhea, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis.Oral administration: made as medicinal liquor or made as powders, 3-6g.
Examples Injuries from fall: common Lamiophlomis 1-2 qian, pestle the fresh herb and apply onto the lesions externally.
