Description Dungarunga or shrub like, 3m tall. Simple leaf and pinnately compound leaf; simple leaf grown on short stipe; Pinnately compound leaf with 3-5 leaflets, lanceolate, elliptic, long circular or invert ovate elliptic, 5-19cm long, tip blunt and pointed, basal part wedge shaped, hairless, entire, lateral vein distinct; petiolule 1-5mm long. Inflorescence axillary, rarely basidixed, 3-5cm long, 2.5-5cm wide, rarely shorter, the basidixed comparatively long, 14cm long; rachis, peduncle, sepal usually covered by caducous brownish rusty tiny soft hairs; calyx lobe ovate; petal white, long elliptic, about 3-4mm long, smooth; stamen (5-8) 10, slightly unequal in length, connectivum without gland, however, forming extending raised tine in the tip, upper part of filament wide, lower part slightly narrow; ovary hairless, with stipe. Fruit spherical or elliptic, 1-1.5cm in diameter, light yellowish white, turning light red or dark vermilion, semi-transparent when mature, oily glandular dot distinct, both surfaces pale and dark after drying. Flowering: March to May, fruiting: July to September.
Distribution Growing on mountain slopes, river valleys, forests near river beach and thickets. Distributed in Taiwan, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Yunnan and Guizhou. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Guangxi.
Part Used Medical part: roots and leaves. Chinese name: Shanxiaoju.
Harvest & Processing Roots: collected throughout the year, well washed, sliced and sundried. Leaves: used fresh.
Chemistry Root and stem bark contain glycofoline.
Properties & Actions Taste bitter, neutral in nature.Removing wind, relieving exterior syndrome, clearing phlegm, relieving cough, reinforcing qi, dissipating stasis and dispersing swelling.
Indications & Usage Used for common cold and cough, dyspeptic retention and anorexia, dyspeptic abdominalgia, hernia pain, swelling pains from falls.Oral administration: decocting, 9-15g. External application: appropriate amount, prepared decoction for washing; or triturated fresh leaves for application.
Examples Root:
Icteric hepatitis: (Glycosmis) root 12g. Decoct in water and swallow.
Leaves:
Swelling pain and injuries from fall: (Glycosmis) fresh leaves, pestle, prepare with liquor, and apply externally.
