Ukhrul is a district in Manipur where the tangkhul resides. It extends from latitudes of 24° 29’ and 25° 42 N, and longitudes of 94° 30 and 94° 45 E. This data included Kamjong District which formally was a subdivision of Ukhrul. The Ukhrul District borders Myanmar towards the east, Kangpokpi and Senapati District in the east, Kamjong district in the south and the state of Nagaland in the Northern part. In terms of area it is 4544 Square Km. It consist of more than 200 villages. The total population of Ukhrul district is around 2 lakh with a literacy rate of 81%. When we discuss Ukhrul Town, we are pinning it to the main town of Ukhrul District and it cannot entirely represent the whole Ukhrul District (which consist of more than 200 villages).

Phangrei is 22 km away from Ukhrul Town. Lately, it has become a major picnic spot for tourist, vloggers and locals alike. It is one of the most photographed places in Ukhrul. It consists of meadow-like mountain ranges blending itself into grassland. The mountain host varieties of seasonal flowers for different seasons. It is a great place for camping, and enjoy the sunset and to be awoken by the chirping birds in the dawn. If you didn’t bring your own tent, never mind you will get a hotel around the area itself otherwise, you can also hire tents for from Ukhrul town. Paragliding was introduced during the Shirui Lily festival of 2019, and hoping for more actions in the days to come.

Shirui peak

Shirui Peak (18 km from Ukhrul Town) attracts thousands of mountain climbers every year. It is 2835m above sea level and attracts tourist, students from all over the world. The climb takes place around the last week of May every year. The climb may be tough but the reward is sweet. Yes, on the top of the peak grows the famous Shirui Lily (Lilium Mackliniae), a very rare species of plant. The flower was discovered by Frank Kingdon-Ward in 1946. And on top of that you can enjoy the scenic view of nature from above. Remember, May-June is a rainy season so you may be covered in cloud or mist. But above the hill the weather changes in minutes, so it will be sunny for half an hour and cloudy the next minute, and sunny again. It is an incredible experience.

Shirui Peaks are visited a lot during the falls. During September-October, there will be no rain, no Shirui Lily but the mountain is filled with carpets of summer flowers.

Mova Cave

The Mova Cave is located in Hundung. It is a beautiful naturally crafted limestone cave. It is open from 7am – 5 pm every day except national holiday the hours may differ. The main cave is as big as a hall where it can accommodate around a hundred people at a time. It is just 13 km away from Ukhrul Town. Nearby the cave, there stood a steep and magnificent solid rock mountain.
