Anderson tabbed Big 12 Athlete of the Week

IRVING, Texas -- The Big 12 selected Texas women's track and field junior Alexandria Anderson as the Big 12 Athlete of the Week, announced Tuesday, Jan. 22. The Chicago native won three events, met the provisional standard in two and missed a third qualifying mark by less than three inches at the Illinois Women's Quadrangular meet in Champaign, Ill.

Anderson won the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes, and the long jump in scoring 27 of Texas' 119 points. In the 60, she tied the Illinois Armory Track record of 7.31 seconds, set earlier this year by Miami's Yvonne Mensah. Her time is the third fastest 60m time in the NCAA this year. The third-year Longhorn also added an NCAA provisional qualifier in the 200 with the second fastest time in the country this year (23.85 on a flat track). She nearly added a third provisional standard in the long jump. She led the field with a career-best jump of 19-10.75 (6.06m), which fell just 2.5 inches shy of the provisional standard.

Anderson started the 2007-08 season strong meeting provisional standards in the first two meets (Houston Indoor Opener and Illinois Women's Quadrangular). She provisionally qualified in the 60 (7.34) in running one of the top two times in the NCAA this season at the Houston meet.

In her third season on the Forty Acres, Anderson has earned a spot among the best in Texas history, the NCAA and the world. She is fourth on UT's all-time performers list in the indoor 60-meter dash (7.25) and eighth all-time in the indoor 200-meter dash (23.39). She earned a national championship as the second leg of UT's NCAA Champion 4x100-meter relay in 2006 and an individual U.S. junior national championship 100-meter dash in June of 2006. On the international scene, Anderson won a gold medal with the 4x100-meter relay at the 2006 International Athletics Association Federation
(IAAF) World Junior Championship.
