The name or term "Defensor" refers to more than one character or idea. For a list of other meanings, see Defensor (disambiguation).
Defensor is an Autobot combiner from the Generation 1 continuity family.

First Aid didn't feel like being an arm today.

The combined form of the five Protectobots Defensor exists specifically to safeguard human life. In many ways he feels about the human race the way a parent would their children and he would give his life away in an instant rather than let one human come to harm. Defensor is emotionally attached to humans on a level that sometimes worries his fellow Autobots. He identifies with them the same way a sheep dog would with its flock or a puppy with its human owners. As far as Defensor is concerned the humans are his "kind." Sadly the titanic robot giant's attempts at personal interaction and friendly exchanges with humans tend to fail. We humans tend to be more wary and frightened of his alien nature and great size than Defensor can understand. Despite this, Defensor is fairly well adjusted mentally compared to almost every other contemporary gestalt.

Defensor's most notable ability is a powerful force field he can create within 50 feet of his person, but it is very fuel consumptive and he cannot maintain it for long.

Defensor is the combined form of the Protectobots:

Additionally, Defensor has a host of auxiliary components who can fill in when a core Protectobot is injured or indisposed. These secondary members include Rook, Medix, Heatrock, Skyfeather, and even Ratchet. Sometimes Groove cedes his place as a limb to one of the substitutes and instead forms a chest plate for the combiner, whilst another specific combination results in God Guardian.

In one universe, Defensor is not formed from the Protectobots at all, but another team known as the Rescuebots.

Events from the UK-only comic stories are in italics.

An erroneous account placed Defensor on Cybertron hundreds of years ago. In said account, he helped send two Autobot mini-cassettes, Raindance and Grand Slam, to Earth after detecting the Underbase traveling towards the organic world, to forewarn the Autobots already posted there of its approach. Club Con!

This appearance by Defensor is contrary to implicit US continuity and explicit UK continuity showing he was created on Earth in modern times.

Defensor's birth was prophesized by a dream shared by Optimus Prime and Buster Witwicky, due to their independent connections to the Creation Matrix. They observed a mission that began with the Protectobots and Aerialbots watching over the Pullen Power Plant. In response to an attack by the Stunticons and Combaticons, the Protectobots formed Defensor, and thanks to their superior cooperative skills, were able to help Superion defeat both Menasor and Bruticus. Optimus hesitated, remembering the big guy's name only at the last second.

Optimus Prime and Megatron met at a fuel research station with the Protectobots and the Combaticons, planning to brawl over it. Optimus revealed that the Protectobots could combine to form Defensor, but Megatron responded in having his Combaticons merge into Bruticus.

He has to shout his own name when Optimus isn't there to do it.

When Ethan Zachary suggested they uploaded themselves to the computer to battle over it safely, both sides agreed. In the virtual world, after each individual Protectobot had taken care of the Combaticon, they combined to fight Megatron, leaving Optimus Prime safely off to the side. Defensor burned the bridge he and Megatron were standing on, letting them both "die" in the virtual world. It would have worked perfectly had Megatron not cheated. Afterdeath! These events were observed by the time travelling Dicet Alpha-zero. The Quest!

Not long after, the Protectobots were summoned by the current leader Grimlock to find and arrest Blaster. They came up against the Combaticons during this mission, culminating in a battle between Defensor and Bruticus in an old train yard. Their battle wrecked the entire area, threatening to kill several human children in the process. Defensor was protected by his forcefield, while Bruticus countered with Defensor's inability to aim. Ultimately Bruticus defeated Defensor by beating him over the head with an entire train. He was only saved by Blaster, freed by the humans, defeating Bruticus by causing an electrical tower to topple on him. Child's Play

Following Optimus Prime's return to life, the Protectobots were assigned to guard the backup copy of the floppy disk that had enabled his resurrection, stored at an Alternate Reality, Inc. warehouse. When both the Protectobots and Autobot Powermasters failed to stop Dreadwing from stealing the disk, Getaway tried to grab the fleeing Decepticons, but ended up getting his hand caught in their fuselage as they swept away into the skies. The Protectobots formed Defensor and prepared to shoot Dreadwing down, regardless of the consequences to Getaway. Joyride told him that wasn't what Optimus would've wanted, and Defensor hesitated long enough for Dreadwing to escape. Defensor was then blasted from behind by the Combaticons, who quickly sped off as well. With the mission a failure, Defensor was forced to separate into his component Autobots and return to Autobase.Prime Bomb!

Defensor once reduced Bruticus to scrap with a single shot, dryly noting afterwards that "there's junk all over the street." Later, he attempted to defend the Autobot headquarters against Decepticon attack by using his forcefield, which almost immediately failed. He was blasted back into his component parts by the Decepticons. B.O.T.

In the year 2006, when First Aid was unable to prevent the theft of Metroplex's transformation cog, he left the Protectobots, feeling that he was useless and a liability to the rest of the Autobots. Unfortunately, this left the remaining Protectobots with the unenviable task of resuming their duties as Defensor with only one arm. Defensor safely managed to catch a train thrown by the Decepticons, but remarked that this would have been a lot easier if First Aid had been there. The Ultimate Weapon

When the Decepticons staged a series of nonsensical raids across Japan, Defensor fought his nemesis Bruticus outside a dojo. After knocking Bruticus down, he tried to dissuade him from bringing further harm to the humans, but failed. The Combaticons were soon chased away by Sky Lynx. The Burden Hardest to Bear

Later that year, Defensor was standing guard outside of Swofford and Morgan's lab when the Hate Plague-infected Superion first broke free. The Protectobots transformed and fled in order to avoid infection. Not long thereafter, however, Defensor was attempting to clear a bridge of innocent bystanders when the crazed Superion came hunting for him and infected the Protectobot combiner. With Hot Rod focused on locating and recharging the Matrix of Leadership, the other Autobots were tasked with running interference for him against the Decepticons. The Protectobots were summoned to Cybertron to defend the planet against Galvatron's latest invasion, and protect the new super-metal, Cybertonuron, which Vector Sigma had developed. The fighting escalated when Defensor and Bruticus were formed and began grappling with one another. Cybertron Is in Grave Danger, Part 1 Defensor eventually emerged victorious over his simple-minded nemesis, delivering a crushing back-blow as the coup-de-gras. Cybertron Is in Grave Danger, Part 2 Later on Earth, Defensor assembled during a Protectobot mission to save the citizens of Peru from an active volcano. His efforts were waylaid by the Decepticon Headmasters, though, as Mindwipe blasted him with a paralysis ray, leaving him immobilized and unable to help. The Dormant Volcano Mysteriously Erupts

Defensor assembled on the moon to attack the Decepticons during Scorponok's leadership rally. The tide turned when Galvatron arrived and galvanized his troops to strike back at the Autobots. Defensor was literally torn limb from limb by the counter-fire, and fled with the other Autobots. Return of the Immortal Emperor The Protectobots later formed Defensor to defend the emergency energon rations the Autobots were sending to planet Sandra. Defensor fought against Devastator to protect the supplies. SOS from Planet Sandra

As the Decepticons launched five simultaneous attacks on the Autobots around the globe, Defensor was assembled to respond to one of the sites. He was seen battling with Sixshot on Galvatron's monitors. Considering how much Galvatron was crowing about Sixshot's mad skillzz, odds are Defensor didn't win. The Emperor of Destruction Vanishes on an Iceberg Later on, Defensor helped Raiden and Computron demolish an old Decepticon base after the enemy abandoned the planet Earth. Following a lengthy period of inactivity, the Decepticons renewed their attacks on Earth. With Fortress still off in space, Spike Witwicky dispatched the Protectobots to attend to the threats. In Canberra, Australia, the Protectobots confronted Bruticus at one of Scorponok's new Death Towers as Defensor. Defensor was beaten severely by Bruticus, and First Aid was even knocked out of the arm socket. Using Scramble Power, Defensor switched Streetwise up to his shoulder and reattached First Aid as a leg, still carrying his fireball cannon. Despite this cunning(?) trick, Defensor was defeated by Bruticus. After Cybertron entered its new Golden Age, the war between the Autobots and Decepticons still raged in space and on Earth. Defensor was permanently destroyed in battle with his nemesis, Menasor. Only Streetwise, acting as one of the giant's legs at the time, managed to survive the colossal damage Defensor suffered. Generation 2: Redux

The Special Teams

Defensor was posted at the Pullen Power Plant to protect it while its human workers were absent, evacuated due to the possibility of a landslide occurring in the area. He was then ordered to transform into his component pieces. The Protectobots later re-combined into Defensor when faced with Menasor. Though Bruticus soon joined the fray, the Aerialbots came along as well, and combined into Superion to even out the playing field. Superion squared off against Menasor while Defensor took on Bruticus. Defensor was able to defeat Bruticus when the Decepticon gestalt pause mid-battle due to being distracted by Menasor. He was then attacked by Starscream, but was able to defend himself with his personal forcefield. He asked Superion to deal with Starscream while he took over the battle against Menasor. G1 WarWithin Defensor.jpg

During the so-called Dark Ages where the Autobots and Decepticons split up into many smaller factions, the Wreckers were searching for Ratbat's Ultracons in the Tagan Heights when Devastator was unleashed. Upon hearing the news, the Protectobots decided to counter-attack to prevent an escalation of hostilities, and formed Defensor to counter the Decepticon combiner. Escalation As this was (presumably) before the Protectobots' combined mentality was refined, Defensor and Devastator's all-out brawl risked destroying the entire area. Just as Defensor looked ready to finish Devastator off, Springer pointed out all the destruction caused by the brawl. Unfortunately this distraction gave Devastator the chance to recover and savagely beat Defensor, prompting the Protectobots to separate and fight him as a team. This worked out better for them, as they emerged victorious. Devastation Troubled by the events of this fight, Hot Spot became obsessive about working out the kinks in Defensor's processor. Millions of years later, Defensor and the Omnibots tried to prevent Menasor from escaping a detention facility and got their butts kicked. Ultra Magnus had to bail them out. Twin Twist and Topspin were assigned to get the Protectobots back on their feet. Wonder which of those limbs are Mainframe and Grotusque.

Hot Spot, Groove, First Aid, Streetwise, and Blades were part of a medical/security detail, escorting Mirage back to Cybertron, and a summit with the representatives of the newly rediscovered colony of Caminus. Upon learning that Caminus was under attack by Devastator, Optimus Prime asked the newly nicknamed "Protectobots" to accompany him in defending the spacebridge. When Devastator dragged an unconscious Superion through the bridge from Caminus, Chromia, Ironhide, and the Decepticons who had been trying to fight Devastator followed him through the bridge and preoccupied him enough for Starscream to use the Enigma of Combination to heal Superion. One of the Camien delegates pointed out that Devastator had already beaten Superion once, so Starscream "drafted" the nearby Protectobots and used the Enigma to combine them, and bystander Rook, into a new gestalt. Rising and coming online, Defensor targeted Devastator as needing to be destroyed. He and Superion grappled with their Prowl-dominated counterpart, having a tough go of it, but gaining the upper hand when Defensor proved to learn quickly—he shot his arm off as a rocket, through a damaged spot on Devastator's back, destroying Devastator's combination, and knocking him back into his component parts. Mistakes and Mayhem

In the aftermath, Starscream stationed Superion and Defensor on Caminus, guarding the vital spacebridge to Cybertron. Much to Optimus Prime's concern, Defensor had still not separated himself. Eventually, Menasor reappeared, accompanied by a rebuilt Devastator. Believing that Devastator, who now incorporated Scoop, was still loyal to Prowl, Defensor tried to fight him, sparking a brawl between the combiners. The battle sent all four combiners hurtling through the damaged space bridge and onto a distant alien planet. The quartet battled until a new combiner arrived, promising to put a stop to the mayhem once and for all. You, Me, and the Universe This was easier said than done, and Defensor and Superion had to protect an uncertain Optimus Maximus from a berserk Devastator. Optimus Maximus finally managed to reach a consensus with his components, and the three combiners teamed up, battling Devastator and Menasor in a fight that spanned across the colony worlds. Over the course of the fight, Defensor got the upper hand against Menasor and knocked him out, dragging his unconscious body back through the space bridge to Cybertron. Optimus Maximus, Defensor, and Superion managed to surround Devastator and tear him back into his components as the rest of the gang reappeared on Cybertron. All That Remains

The Protectobots subsequently returned to the Lost Light, where they were locked in memory loops by Getaway. Full Circle Seeking to neutralize the looming threat of Defensor, Getaway pushed Atomizer to execute either Hot Spot, First Aid, or Rook, justifying his orders as amputating Defensor, not murdering a person. Though Atomizer ultimately killed Rook, the Protectobots were freed by Riptide and able to substitute Rook with Ambulon's intact corpse. Defensor made a grand entrance into the shuttle bay and tossed around the security guards but was separated into his components by Star Saber. The security team then gunned down all the Protectobots save First Aid, heavily injuring them. Journey's End The four all recovered from their injuries and returned to health, but would presumably require another substitute member to form Defensor. How To Say Goodbye And Mean It: Part 2

The Transformers

  • Defensor (1986)
    • Takara ID number: C-76
Defensor is formed out of the five individual Protectobots, with Hot Spot serving as the central torso component. Unusually for Scramble City-style combiners, Defensor's head is not a separate piece, but hidden inside his fire truck ladder assembly, like Inferno. This gives his head an unusually high amount of articulation. He is armed with Hot Spot's twin fireball cannons. Though any of the smaller Protectobots can serve as any limb, the "correct" configuration has Blades and First Aid as the right and left arm, respectively, and Groove and Streetwise as the right and left leg, respectively.
Defensor's arms are very commonly mis-transformed, even in official artwork such as the art at the top of this page (in which Streetwise and First Aid have also reversed positions). The instructions (and the cartoon model) show the nose of Blades' helicopter form, and the front panel of First Aid's ambulance mode, unfolded to hang off of Defensor's shoulders (as shown at right.) But almost as frequently, both these components are shown folded away. First Aid's legs are often not unfolded properly as well, giving Defensor a shorter arm than he would otherwise have.
Along with Metroplex, Menasor, Bruticus, and Superion, Defensor was designed for an aborted Diaclone subline that would have been called Jizai Gattai (自在合体 "Limitless Combination"), which was shelved to make way for the Transformers line. Defensor was available as the individual Protectobots sold separately, or as a giftset.
This mold was later redecoed into Guard City.

Fashion tip: Always remember to put on matching shoes.
  • Defensor (Micro-Changer Combiner, 2013)
    • Set number: A4474
    • Pieces: 85
Part of the second wave of Kreon Micro-Changer combiner sets, Defensor comes as a set of four component Kreons: Blades, First Aid, Hot Spot, and Streetsmart. The Kreons can be built into their robot modes or their vehicle modes, or they can be built into Defensor by taking them apart and combining their pieces. Defensor dual-wields Hot Spot's guns.
Like the entire Micro Changer combiner sets, Defensor comes with only one Kre-O display brick, and a sticker sheet composed of his leg detailing and a Kre-O logo. Due to the leg stickers being slightly transparent, applying them into the black-colored leg parts can render the details being semi-transparent. The instructions also did not mention on where you should put the Kre-O logo sticker. Also, Defensor's combined mode's waist part is somehow prone to falling off from the assembly while posing, and he has a problem standing straight due to how the legs are constructed.
As Kreon combiners only involve four components, Kre-O Groove instead ended up as a Series 2 blind-bagged figure. But Groove can be combined with Defensor if you have any sense of creativity.

BEHOLD! THE MIGHT OF REDECO POTENTIAL!
  • Protectobot Blades (Deluxe Class, 2015)
  • Protectobot Rook (Deluxe Class, 2015)
    • Protectobot Groove (Deluxe Class, 2016)
  • Protectobot Hot Spot (Voyager Class, 2015)
  • Protectobot First Aid (Deluxe Class, 2015)
  • Protectobot Streetwise (Deluxe Class, 2015)
    • Medix (Deluxe Class, Botcon 2016 Customization Class)
    • Ratchet (Deluxe Class, Botcon 2016 Customization Class)
  • Protectobot Groove (Legends Class, 2015)
    • Accessories: Rifle (formed from Hot Spot's two guns), four hands/feet, four small weapons
Part of the Combiner Wars subline imprint of the Generations toyline, Defensor is a combiner with Deluxe Class Blades, Streetwise, First Aid, and new member Rook forming the limbs, Voyager Class Hot Spot forming the torso, and Legends Class Groove acting as additional chest armor. Any of the Deluxes can form any limb, though their packaging and stock photography nominally places Rook and Blades as the left and right arms, and Streetwise and First Aid as the left and right legs. Stock photography also shows Groove being connected to the chest upside-down. When connected correctly (with his wheel facing up), the pegs on Groove's arms can be plugged into a pair of holes on Defensor's chest.
Eleven months after the entire Protectobots' release, the Hasbro release of Unite Warriors Deluxe Class Groove was announced and released both in Asia (first as a promotional item from Toys"R"Us Taiwan, later as a general retail release) and the U.S. (as a "shared exclusive" between various online retailers), intended to replace Rook and his own Legends Class counterpart to complete the original Protectobot roster. Medix or Ratchet can also replace any Deluxe Class Protectobot limb.
Unfortunately, Defensor will more often than not end up leaning forward due to the weight of his upper body and badly spaced hip ratchets, unless posed in a way that will offset said weight.
As a part of the third and fourth wave promotion in Hasbro's Asian markets, a free sticker sheet for the Protectobots and Optimus Maximus was given out when purchasing any four Deluxe Class toys from those waves. As such, Defensor was given Generation 1 toy-esque stickers for the owner to apply if they wanted.[1] These sticker sheets did not include stickers for either version of Groove, however.

Unite Warriors

  • Guardian (giftset, December 12, 2015)
    • ID number: UW-03
    • English name: Defensor
Takara's iteration of Combiner Wars Defensor is sold in a gift set including the five original Protectobots, with Groove (as a new Deluxe-sized mold) included instead of Rook and the Legends-sized Groove. His deco, while cartoon-accurate, skips over some of the intricate molded detail on his chest and legs.
Unite Warriors Guardian was released as a TakaraTomy Mall exclusive, rather than being a regular release.
When purchased from select retailers outside Japan, the giftset includes a commemorative coin. The coin's package is shaped after Defensor's chest... albeit based on the Hasbro version of the figure, with most of the front deco recreating Legends Groove's chestplate mode.

Transformers Ramune

Defensor keshigomu.jpg
  • Guardian (1986)
While no figure of Defensor was released by Hasbro as part of their 1987 Decoy promotion, the Protectobot combiner did have a soft rubber figure crafted in his image that was available exclusively in Japan, as part of a second wave of the figures released there by Kabaya as part of the Transformers Ramune series, along with other Transformers 2010 characters. Like the other figures in this series, Defensor was sold in a blindpacked box and was available in multiple colors, including red, blue, and yellow.

Forms Robo

  • Guardian (1987)
Defensor was also part of the small Forms Robo collection of larger rubber figures, with this version of the character standing at around twice the height of a regular Decoy. Like the other figures in this series, Defensor was packaged in an individual baggie and was available in red, blue, green, and yellow.

Transformers Gum

  • Hot Spot (2012)
  • Gaia Guardian (2012)
The components for Kabaya's take on Defensor were actually sold in separate lines: Hot Spot was sold in the rebooted Transformers Gum line while the limbs, along with new additions Heatrock and Skyfeather, were sold in their own subline. Hot Spot could merge with the usual four limbs to create Defensor. In combined form, he could also wear the two new members as chest armor in a configuration known as God Guardian. Surprisingly for a Kabaya product, he can Scramble-combine.

Notes

  • Like other names such as Megatron and Cybertron, the name "Defensor" was also used by Marvel Comics before the Transformers line was conceived, for an Argentinian superhero (real name Gabriel Sepulveda) who first appeared in Contest of Champions #1 (1982) and was killed off-panel prior to Captain America #422 (1993).
  • In IDW's Generation 1 comics, Defensor speaks with a verbal tic reminiscent of Omega Supreme from the original Generation 1 cartoon.
