Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise has suffered a setback in his recovery from injury.

The 21-year-old was ruled out of Palace’s pre-season and the start of the new campaign after tearing his hamstring while playing for France during the Under-21 European Championship in June.

That problem was expected to keep him out for up to three months, and he recently returned to team training after a period of rehabilitation which was partially conducted in the U.S. at Inter Miami’s training ground.

But he suffered an injury to the same hamstring last week and will now have to wait to return to action.

How big of a blow is this for Brentford and how will they cope?

How big of a blow is this for Brentford and how will they cope?

This is a huge blow for Brentford.

Henry is the longest-serving player of their current squad and is one of the first names on Frank’s team sheet. Since August 2021, Henry has only missed five top-flight matches. He is an exceptional one-v-one defender and plays an important role in Brentford’s attacks by making overlapping runs on the left wing. Henry’s development over the last two years has led to calls for him to play for England, but he has never been called up by Gareth Southgate.

Full-back is an area of Brentford’s squad which does not have a lot of strength in depth. Aaron Hickey is ambipedal, which means he will switch from right-back to cover Henry on the left. Mads Roerslev, who replaced Henry against Newcastle, or Kristoffer Ajer will play on the right.

Hickey, who started both of Scotland’s matches during the international break, will play a lot of football over the next few months as the only naturally left-footed option. Henry’s absence might even prompt Frank to switch formation and predominantly use 3-5-2 instead of 4-4-3 for extra protection at the back.

Brentford have a few options within their B team including Val Adedokun whose best position is left wing-back. The 20-year-old has never made a senior appearance for the club. Adedokun joined Brentford in August 2021 from Irish side Dundalk.

Brentford defender Henry suffers suspected ACL injury

Brentford defender Henry suffers suspected ACL injury

Rico Henry has suffered a suspected anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Henry went down awkwardly in the 39th minute of Brentford’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday following a collision with Kieran Trippier. Henry was clutching his left knee in pain and the referee Craig Pawson signalled for a stretcher. However, the 26-year-old was able to get up and walk off the pitch into the dressing room aided by two members of Brentford’s medical staff.

Thomas Frank said after the game Henry would be assessed on Monday and scans have revealed the extent of the damage. The average recovery time for an ACL injury is around eight months which would mean Henry could miss the rest of the season.

This would be the second time Henry has suffered an ACL injury during his career. In September 2017, Henry damaged his right knee in Brentford’s 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough.

Henry did not make another appearance for the club until November 2018.

Hudson-Odoi still has the potential to blossom into a superstar

Hudson-Odoi still has the potential to blossom into a superstar

(Photo: Getty Images)

The first time many Chelsea supporters heard of Hudson-Odoi was in October 2017 when, as the youngest member of the 21-man squad England manager Steve Cooper took to the Under-17 World Cup in India, he scored his country’s first goal of the tournament in a 4-0 win over Chile and went on to start six of their seven matches, culminating in a thrilling 5-2 victory against Spain in the final.

Hudson-Odoi provided a dynamic wing presence for Cooper’s team along with Jadon Sancho, who assisted him for the goal against Chile and shone in the group stage before being recalled by Borussia Dortmund. It was no hammer blow for a squad brimming with talent that, five years on, will be familiar to Premier League watchers: Golden Ball winner Phil Foden, Marc Guehi, Emile Smith Rowe, Conor Gallagher, Morgan Gibbs-White and Golden Boot winner Rhian Brewster.

Hudson-Odoi and Gibbs-White are now teammates at Nottingham Forest.

Callum Hudson-Odoi said he was "delighted" to score on his Nottingham Forest debut yesterday during his side's 1-1 draw with Burnley.

The 22-year-old joined the club from Chelsea on transfer deadline day, and 61 minutes into his debut for his new team, he curled in a wonderful strike to bring his side level at the City Ground.

Starting in a new-look front four alongside Morgan Gibbs-White, Anthony Elanga, and Taiwo Awoniyi, Hudson-Odoi looked lively and dangerous throughout the game and he spoke about his emotion at his debut goal after the draw.

He told Sky Sports: "As soon as I shot, I saw the angle of the ball and I knew that it was either going to hit the post or go in. Luckily it hit the post and went in, so I'm delighted.

"I'm buzzing. Being here for the first time and playing with the team. Everyone here has been so welcoming since I've been here. It was great to play in front of the amazing Forest fans today.

"I'm happy with the goal but disappointed that we weren't able to get the three points but we will go again."

Forest are next in action against league leaders Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday.

Frank on Toney: 'He can go at the right price and right time'

Frank on Toney: 'He can go at the right price and right time'

Brentford manager Thomas Frank says Ivan Toney can leave the club at the "right price" and the "right time."

Toney, who is currently four months into an eight-month ban from football due to betting offences, has two years left on his Brentford contract and has been linked with a move away from the club when his suspension concludes in January.

The 27-year-old striker spoke of his admiration for several of the Premier League's biggest clubs and his manager revealed that Brentford are a selling club when certain conditions are met.

Talking to Sky Sports Monday Night Football, Frank said: "We are a selling club if the right price is there and if the time is right. I think if they have developed well with us and been on the journey. They have proven to be good enough to play at the top clubs, then they can go at the right price.

"Yes, this does apply to Toney. I understand why there are a lot of rumours about him. For me, I think he is one of the best strikers. I don't see many in the world that are better than him. He scored 20 goals in the Premier League last year. Imagine him in a top team. He would easily score 20-25 goals a season. I think he is composed, a good finisher, and has a top mentality.

"He is a Brentford player now and in today's market, everyone knows that goalscorers and attackers are the most expensive. Toney would be very expensive.

As part of Toney's ban, he was prohibited from returning to team training until September. The England international trained with his teammates for the first time since the conclusion of last season yesterday, and Frank hinted at his talisman returning from suspension better than before.

Frank added: "Focusing on him (Toney). I had a long meeting with him today at training as it was his first day back. So good to have him in.

"We presented the plan for him. We will try and create Ivan Toney 2.0, the beast. We are looking forward to it."

Brentford are next in action against Everton on Saturday.

For starters, the video that accompanied news of his contract extension showed he is confident enough to try his hand at a bit of acting, putting himself out there in a way many footballers, senior or otherwise, would shy away from.

After signing a new deal at Manchester City until 2026, only a couple of months after giving the OK to a summer transfer to Bayern Munich, he is feeling loved — and it shows.

Bukayo Saka grabbed the ball like a man in a hurry. The corner routine that won Arsenal the game at Goodison Park was anything but rushed, though.

From the moment he placed the ball down to the moment he tapped it to Martin Odegaard, 26 seconds had elapsed.

Sky Sports latched onto it as a seemingly excessive amount of time, but Opta statistics show the average delay between the award of a corner and the kick being taken was actually 33.2 seconds in the Premier League last season.

Everton receive sizeable loan from 777 Partners

Everton have received a sizeable loan from prospective new owners 777 Partners.

It was announced last week that the American investment firm has an agreement to buy the club from Farhad Moshiri, subject to an approvals process.

Details of the financing have not been disclosed but amid Everton’s perilous financial situation — influenced by the mounting construction costs for their Bramley-Moore Dock stadium — it can be revealed that 777 has already made a payment worth tens of millions.

Premier League rules prevent the company from investing directly into Everton via an equity injection, unless and until the deal it has in place with Moshiri is granted a green light.

Given Everton’s pressing need for immediate funding, 777 has lent them money on an interim basis to help with short-term working capital requirements and the stadium build.

The U.S.-based vehicle intends to maintain a continuous dialogue with Everton while waiting to learn if its acquisition will be allowed to proceed.

This is likely to involve 777 providing some expertise from its multi-club model to Everton and occupying an observer role on the board of directors.

On behalf of 777, Everton have communicated to their fan advisory board and shareholders association that the prospective new owners will meet and engage with them and the wider fanbase.

Tonali expects to feel 'a lot of emotions' vs AC Milan

Tonali expects to feel 'a lot of emotions' vs AC Milan

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali says he has had a "difficult start" to life at Newcastle United and expects to feel "a lot of emotions" when he plays against former club AC Milan in the Champions League.

The 23-year-old joined Newcastle in the summer for a fee in the region of €70million (£60.4m) and has so far featured in four Premier League matches, scoring a goal in the 5-1 victory over Aston Villa.

Tonali also played an influential role for AC Milan as they reached the semi-finals of the Champions League last season, only to be defeated by rivals Inter.

Speaking ahead of the game, he said: "This summer has been hard and I’ve had a difficult start. At the beginning it was not easy to find my place at Newcastle, but I have found people to support me and to help me and I started to be happier. I have to thank Mr (Eddie) Howe and my team-mates have been great. They are helping me in my personal and professional life. They have helped me settle.

"The language at the beginning was very, very difficult for me, communicating with the guys I found extremely tough and on the pitch everything changes when you swap countries and in the beginning I was lost, but it is getting easier and I’m very happy. It is getting easier, tactically, the language, everything.

“It will be the most thrilling feeling to come out into the stadium packed with people again. They let me live my dream here at AC Milan, the team I supported first of all, but now I come back as a rival. I will have a lot of feelings tomorrow, a lot of emotions. Everything happened so fast with the transfer, I was overwhelmed at first, but I have come across a wonderful team, wonderful staff and play for people who love football. The people of Newcastle will help anyone.

“When the draw was made and we found out about the group, I saw it coming. I knew it had to happen. It was like destiny."

Newcastle play AC Milan at San Siro on Tuesday, with the reverse fixture taking place on December 13.

Spain players weren’t told about Nations League squad call-up amid strikes

Spain players weren’t told about Nations League squad call-up amid strikes

Several of the Spain players on strike from playing for the women’s national team had not been told they were going to be called up for their upcoming Nations League fixtures this month.

Spain’s head coach Montse Tome has selected most of the 23 players who won the Women’s World Cup in her first squad, with matches against Sweden and Switzerland to come this month.

Fifteen of the World Cup players have retained their places. Jenni Hermoso, Ivana Andres, Irene Guerrero, Laia Codina, Alba Redondo, Salma Paralluelo, Rocio Galvez and Claudia Zornoza have not been selected.

On Friday, 39 players – which included 21 out of the 23 World Cup-winning side – said they wanted further changes at the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), confirming that the resignation of former president Luis Rubiales, and the sacking of Jorge Vilda as head coach did not suffice to persuade them to rejoin the team.

Sources close to several of the striking players, who asked to speak anonymously to protect relationships, told The Athletic they had not been informed they were going to be called up. They said the players remained committed to the joint statement they published on Friday.

These same sources also said that at a meeting with the Spanish Football Federation leadership on Friday, the striking players were asked to return to the team now on the understanding that in a month’s time “some of what they have asked for” will be done. The sources said the players decided not to do this, because they still don’t trust the RFEF.

Julian Draxler has joined Qatari side side Al Ahly from Paris Saint-Germain.

The 29-year-old has signed a two-year deal with the club. PSG confirmed Draxler's departure in a club statement which read: "The club would like to wish Julian all the best for the rest of his career."

Draxler is the second player to move to leave PSG in the last week after long-serving midfielder Marco Verratti completed his transfer to Qatari side Al-Arabi.

Draxler joined PSG from Wolfsburg in January 2017 and went on to make 198 appearances for the French club, scoring 26 goals and providing 41 assists.

He won 15 trophies during his time at the club including four Ligue 1 titles.

PSG are next in action tomorrow as they begin their Champions League campaign against Borussia Dortmund at the Parc des Princes.

Manchester City’s injured trio of John Stones, Jack Grealish and Mateo Kovacic will not be fit for their Champions League clash against Crvena zvezda tomorrow.

All three were absent for City’s 3-1 win at West Ham on Saturday, with Stones yet to feature since the Community Shield defeat by Arsenal on August 6.

Grealish has missed City’s last two matches and the last international camp with England, while Kovacic sustained a small issue while with Croatia last week.

"They are getting better," said Guardiola. "Not for tomorrow, hopefully for Nottingham (Forest). We need it because we don’t have a big squad.

"Look what we proved without them. We need competition. We need Jack to compete with Jeremy (Doku) and how important it is that both feel they need to play good."

Nottingham Forest defender Giulian Biancone has completed a permanent move to Olympiacos.

The 23-year-old only made two league appearances after signing on a three-year deal from Troyes last summer, having sustained a serious knee injury early in the season.

Biancone was not included in Forest's 25-man Premier League squad alongside Ethan Horvath, Harry Arter, Jonjo Shelvey and Emmanuel Dennis, although the latter two have since also left the City Ground club.

Olympiacos, who will play in this season's Europa League, are owned by Evangelos Marinakis, who also owns Forest.

The club have now confirmed in a statement that Lemar will now miss a period of time while he undergoes a period of rehabilitation.

The statement read: "Thomas Lemar, operated on for a ruptured Achilles tendon. We wish you a speedy recovery, Thom!"

Prior to his injury, Lemar, who joined the club in 2018 from Monaco, had featured for Diego Simeone's side three times this season.

Atletico are next in action tomorrow as they begin their Champions League campaign against Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico.

Aston Villa defender Lucy Parker has been called up to England's women squad for their upcoming Nations League fixtures later this month.

The 24-year-old is a replacement for Arsenal's Lotte Wubben-Moy, with England playing Scotland on September 22 and the Netherlands on September 26.

It has also been confirmed that Arsenal striker Alessia Russo "will report to St. George’s Park on Wednesday morning after a period of recuperation".

Sarina Wiegman has kept faith with the majority of the squad who reached the final of the Women’s World Cup last month.

She said: “By the time we play our first game, it will be little more than a month since the World Cup final. We have had little time to reflect on all we have achieved so far this year.

“Instead, we will have to make sure the players are fresh enough and ready to perform straight away, if we want to go far in another competition.

“We will play a derby match against Scotland and they have shown good development recently and are getting stronger and stronger, while we know all about the Netherlands of course and the very talented players they have.”

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli says his side are looking to put their 5-1 defeat by rivals Inter Milan behind them as they prepare to face Newcastle tomorrow.

Milan have now lost all five of their matches against Inter in 2023 — already the highest number ever in a calendar year.

"It hasn't been easy, we had a great deal of expectation surrounding the derby, there was a lot of positivity and confidence, and it went how it went, badly," Pioli told said just now.

"It was a huge disappointment but we have the Champions League now, thankfully, because it's the only way we can actually try and switch our focus.

"I'm in debt to the fans because last season when we played really badly they always got behind us.

"I also owe them something because I've become the Milan coach who has lost the most derby games in a calendar year, but we will do everything in our power to make sure this season can still be a very positive campaign."

Neil Warnock will depart Huddersfield Town following Wednesday's fixture against Stoke City but plans to return to football management in the New Year.

The 74-year-old's successor will be announced by the end of the week.

He signed a one-year deal in the summer after coming out of retirement and kept Town up against all the odds last season, but, Huddersfield owner Kevin M Nagle identifying the man he wants long-term has led to the decision.

“It has come sooner than I thought,” Warnock says. “It is their decision and I adhere by that. You have to move on quickly.

“I’ve always said to Kevin that it’s his club. When he thinks the time is right, he has to make the decision. I’ll then go whenever he wanted me to go. That’s how I left it with him.

“You can’t be fairer than that. There’s been no fall-out. Just one of those things. Kevin has a three-year plan to reach the Premiership.

“If they are in the Premier League in three years, it is a great decision, isn’t it?”
