Michelle Obama Serves Lunch at D.C. Nonprofit

Pablo Martinez Monsivais/Associated Press First Lady Michelle Obama served lunch at Miriams Kitchen in Washington on Thursday.

The homeless men and women gathered at Miriam’s Kitchen as they often do on a Thursday for a cup a coffee, a hot meal, a hair cut and some help finding a job or a place to stay.

But on this day, they received an unexpected greeting from an unexpected visitor. First Lady Michelle Obama was in the kitchen, serving up mushroom risotto and a warm welcome.

“How are you doing?” Mrs. Obama asked the astonished patrons as they lined up for risotto, steamed broccoli, fruit salad and apple-carrot muffins. “My job here is to serve you.”

Miriam’s Kitchen was the latest stop on the first lady’s getting-to-know Washington tour.

“My purpose here is to listen, learn and scoop some risotto,’’ Mrs. Obama told the group of about 50 homeless men and women. She said she hoped her visit would also encourage Americans to volunteer to help the needy during these difficult economic times.

“There is a moment in time when each and every one of us needs a helping hand,’’ Mrs. Obama said. She described Miriam’s Kitchen as “an example of what we can do as a country and a community to help folks when they’re down.”

Miriam’s Kitchen provides homemade meals to 4,000 homeless people a year along with social service assistance, officials said. The soup kitchen, which serves breakfast every day and lunch once a week, does not use processed or canned foods. Instead, meals are prepared with fresh local and organic foods.

Employees at the White House donated eight crates of fresh fruit, including apples, bananas, pineapples and melons, said Scott Schenkelberg, executive director of Miriam’s Kitchen. Some of that fruit was served in the fruit salad on Thursday.

“The cheapest food that you’re going to find is typically processed food, junk food,’’ said Mr. Schenkelberg said. “We could easily fill our menu with those items. We don’t think it’s in the best interest of our clients.’’

Many of the clients – who are overwhelmingly adult men – suffer from hypertension, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and cancer, he said. The soup kitchen is part of Western Presbyterian Church and was established 26 years ago. Mr. Schenkelberg said that the demand for services has been rising recently. The clients at the soup kitchen have typically been the long-time homeless. But now they are seeing an influx in people who have recently lost their homes.

The people who stopped in to eat on Thursday said they were stunned to see Mrs. Obama, who shook many hands in addition to serving food. George Rivera, 52, who found a job and a home with the help of the staff at Miriam’s Kitchen, could not stop smiling. “I never imagined this, not in 100 years,’’ he said.

I think she’s great. I love what she is doing as First lady and I appreciate her just being “regular” Michelle.

Wow, that’s great to see our First Lady out and about doing this. I try to volunteer at a few places (food pantry, animal shelter, senior center), and I hope the First Lady’s actions encourage others to go out and do the same.

There’s such a wide gap between the likes of Michelle Obama and Miriam’s versus the lip service we get from Rush and the Republicans.

Wow it only took 3 posts to pull Rush into this.

He is the Democrats Reverend Wright — someone who will stir up the democratic base but does not really mean anything — they both have some awsome sound bite though.

You are a gem, Michelle. Warmest Regards.

Oh this wonderfull to read. The First Lady sure is an asset to BO administration, and she makes me very proud of the US of A.

A first lady serving the homeless at a shelter that uses fresh, local foods–holy crapoly, this really is a whole new world.

Sadly, she and her husband could do a lot more for the poor by abstaining from alcohol and cigarettes while living in the White House. As I’ve said, no one in my family is even participating in the recession.

What a blessing to have Michelle “open her hands, heart, and mind” to serve “the least among us.” There is a spiritual reward in serving those who many times can not serve themselves. It is only by the GRACE of GOD that we who respond to this calling are serving the needy and not receiving the service. Blessings to all at Miriam’s Kitchen.

Michelle Obama has put “people first” into the role of “First Lady.” Thank you for being an inspiration to us all.

Way to go, Mrs. Obama ! You are an inspiration to our nation. Oh, were America to live up to her ideals, we would all be helping one another, instead of cheating one another !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

We The People are so unbelievably fortunate to have Barack and Michelle lead US into a new way of being in our nation. Principles mean nothing unless your practice them. How inspiring to see two good people walk the talk.

Where’s the wagyu beef, Mrs. Obama?

No matter how kindhearted she is, I just can’t get over the delusion of how Afirmative Action ruined my life and the delusion of how Michelle Obama is associated with my delusional pain.

Don’t you just love the Obamas, with all that they already have to do, they take out time for the less fortunate people.
We need more Presidents families like this in 2016. Anyone who comes after the Obamas leave Washington will have a hard time filling their shoes.

America’s First Lady would this is unthinkable. I don’t think Bush would have let Laura go near the soup kitchen ever.

Obamas are determined to change the society, culture, thinking and politics of this nation for better. Some people do need a slap to understand a positive side of things.

Dear Mrs Obama,

You are such an inspiration to all women, irrespective of age, color or creed. My personal motto is that we are on the earth to serve and you set a shining example.

I am inspired and cant wait to share this with my 2 daughters.

This woman is an absolute treasure, and this is a better country for her example.

They’re eating better than most Americans who work hard everyday. It is too bad that all Americans can’t get a tax break to help them through the hard times.

way to go first lady “O”!

(as for giving conservatives grief poster #3, you should find mr. kristof’s blog from last fall regarding the fact that liberals do not donate time of money to charity at anywhere near the rate of conservatives.
it was refreshing to read a great article based on facts, by a liberal, chastising his fellow liberals.)

also, glad to see the menu has something other than soup and bread. it must be a real blessing for those in need.

Unbelievable (in a very good way)!

Was that before the regular Wednesday White House dinner party? What was on the menu I wonder? A couple of weeks ago it was $100 a pound steaks and the President drinking a toast. Maybe Mrs Obama can take some left overs with her next time. Here’s to dancing the recession away Michelle! Maybe we can get some pictures of the Wednesday White House bashes – along with those of our dead soldiers coming home.

Wake Up America! Taxing the rich is not going to help – Obama has made us all poor just by opening his mouth every day. Too bad for the jobs though – I guess that either the Obama’s or some poor person will have to employ you.

The first First Lady that doesn’t look fake when serving the Public. You’re the best Mrs. Obama!

I may have to hang a picture of Michelle Obama in our house, next to the President. I am just so proud she’s our First Lady.

For the people who love the Obamas, remember that it is possible to appreciate what Michelle is doing without using it as an opportunity to say something negative about their political opponents. We don’t know what Rush Limbaugh does with his time and money in philanthropy. It’s quite possible and in fact very likely that he helps underprivileged kids in huge ways that we never hear about.

What Michelle is doing is great and it isn’t being done to make anyone look bad, it’s all about the people being assisted and inspired to serve. Community activism and service has been part of their lives for nearly their entire adulthood. This is normal for them.
