A new genus, Propeniculus (Copepoda, Pennellidae), is established here to accommodate a pennellid originally described as Peniculus trichiuri Gnanamuthu, 1951, in the new combination, Propeniculus trichiuri (Gnanamuthu, 1951). Four other species of Peniculus (P. sciaenae Gnanamuthu, 1951; P. scomberi Gnanamuthu, 1951; P. stromatei Gnanamuthu, 1951; and P. theraponi Gnanamuthu, 1951) are considered junior synonyms of Propeniculus trichiuri. The habitus of the new genus is generally similar to that of Peniculus. It differs from that genus in that it has a prominent ventral swelling on its cephalothorax, a minute buccal cone, and in the absence of a proboscis. The labral plate is simple (whereas it is complex in Peniculus), and the posterior surface of the labium bears two groups of spinules (two pairs of scale-like plates are found in Peniculus). Sclerotized skeletal bars are present in the neck of the new genus, and these also occur in Metapeniculus but not in Peniculus. P. trichiuri...

Eudactylina indivisa sp. nov., parasitic on Myliobatis peruvianus (Garman) and M. chilensis Philippi, 1892 and E. parva sp. nov., parasitic on Sympterigia brevicaudata Cope, 1877 are described and illustrated. The new species differ from existing specimens of Eudactylina by a combination of characters. Also a new record of E. acanthii A. Scott, 1901 from the type host is given. The

Parasitic copepods of the family Caligidae are common on marine fish worldwide, and some species are responsible for disease outbreaks in aquaculture. Ten species of Lepeophtheirus have thus far been described in the south-eastern Pacific coast. Seven species have been recorded from littoral fish species. However, the latitudinal distribution and host ranges of these Lepeophtheirus spp. are not known. We evaluated, using morphology and molecular analyses, the taxonomic diversity, geographical distributions and host range of known Lepeophtheirus species. Seventeen fish species were examined for copepods. The collected parasites were identified according to their morphology and genetic sequences, based on rDNA 28S and COI genes. The recognition of Lepeophtheirus chilensis and L. mugiloides was indeed difficult due to the high morphological similarities between them. However, their taxonomic statuses were supported by the COI gene and ABGD analysis, with 6% of genetic distance. Moreove...

Lepeophtheirus dissimulatus Wilson, 1905, new host species and new record from Chile, and Lepeophtheirus zbigniewi new species (Copepoda: Caligidae) are described and illustrated. These copepods are parasites of inshore fishes of the coastal waters of Chile.

Lepeophtheirus frecuens, a new species of parasitic copepod from Oplegnathus insignis (Kner) type host fish and other host fishes of the inshore waters of Antofagasta, Chile, is described and illustrated. The new species is separated from its short abdomen congeners by the first maxilla with the medial tine shorter than the lateral one and by a series of differences in its appendages, particularly the second antenna of the male. New host species for Lepeophtheirus chilensis Wilson, 1905 are named. The range of Kroyerina meridionalis Ramirez, 1975 is extended from the Mar del Plata, South Atlantic to the South Pacific coast of Antofagasta, Chile. Some comments about the morphology and morphometric characters of these two species are made.
A ne genus Clavellotis is proposed to accomodate specimens originally described as Anchorella dilatata (Kroyer,1863) parasitic on Cheylodactylus sp.
One new genus and two new species of Lernaeopodidae parasitic on Triakis maculata off the coast of chile are described and illustrated.
The buccal complex for the copepodite, chalimus and adult staged of Metapeniculus antofagastensis is examined and described with the aid of Scanning electron microscope
a new form for Lateracanthus quadripedis and a new species Paeon triakis are described and illustrated

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection is endemic in Argentina. Molecular tools have allowed HAV RNA detection to be extent to sera and feces from patients with different clinical backgrounds. We compare the sensitivity of the RT-PCR protocol we follow using primers targeting different genomic regions and VP3 C terminal was the most sensitive. Sequential sera and fecal samples were obtained from 20 children with acute self limited Hepatitis A. HAV RNA was detectable in 18/20 children if sera and stool specimens were collected at the onset of symptoms and in 19/20 if a later sample was considered. HAV RNA was detectable in serum from 9/20 patients until day 30 and in feces from 2 patients until day 60 and until day 90 in one. Genomic sequences from VP1/2A region in 8 samples showed they all belong to subgenotype IA although they were different between them. HAV RNA was detectable only in 1/11 sera from children with acute liver failure when VP3 C terminal fragment was searched and it belo...

Strains of hepatitis E virus (HEV) isolated from Argentinian patients with sporadic hepatitis, as well as from swine from Argentina, belong to genotype 3. HEV genotype 3 variants have been described associated with acute liver failure (ALF) in adults from Japan and the United Kingdom. In Argentina, 30% of ALF in adults and children are of unknown aetiology. To study if HEV could be an aetiological agent associated with ALF in children, serum and/or fecal samples fJom 35 children (mean age: 6 years, 20 female, 15 male) were analyzed during 2003 and 2004. HEV RNA was detected by RT-nested PCR with primers designed within ORF 1 and ORF 2 regions. HEV RNA could be detected in three cases. Two were 12-year-old boys fom Buenos Aires province and the third was a 3-year-old girl from Corrientes province. Sequence analysis indicates that the three isolates are distinct from each other but all belong to genotype 3, exhibiting a close relationship with swine and human strains fJom sporadic cas...
