This course is an introduction to the archives profession. Its goal is to provide you with an understanding of the role archivists play in society, how aspects of archival administration relate to each other, and the factors that have influenced the evolution of the archival profession. It also serves as a basis for further study in recordkeeping and archival studies through the examination of activities that archivists engage in. This course will:    
  • Examine the core principles and concepts in archival studies, such as preservation and social justice
  • Provide an overview of the work that professional archivists perform
  • Explore the social and political aspects of recordkeeping and the significance of archives
  • Introduce students to current records-related issues that are of concern to archivists and discuss how archivists might become involved in these as a professional responsibility
  • Emphasize options and different approaches to questions and concerns that archivists face on a daily basis.
