General Information:

Tropical evergreen tree species of the family Moraceae.

Native to East Asia - China, India, Nepal, Sikkim, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia.

Also found throughout the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia.

Valued for its wood. Fruit is edible and believed to have medicinal value.

Sometimes cultivated for its fruit in the tropics of the Old and New Worlds.

Fruit:

Up to 7.5cm long.

Pleasant sub-acid flavor.

Occasionally eaten raw.

More commonly used in curries and chutneys.

Health Benefits:

Contains strong antioxidants, including flavonoids and phenolic acids.

Bark exhibits methanolic extracts with strong antioxidant activity.

Heartwood extract has potential skin-whitening properties.
