Background of the Dish

mushroom croquettes

The mushroom croquette is a reversion of a recipe that came from France all the way to Southern Spain.

It is believed that the recipe for croquettes in general (including those with ham, chicken, etc.) arrived with the independence of Spain, freeing itself from the French empire.

Something that the French elites left behind in this territory was croquettes, and the Spanish transformed them into what we know today as traditional tapas.

The main ingredient in this recipe is mushrooms, and this is a version that only became popular in the last few decades.

Nowadays you can go to any restaurant in Andalucia and you will find that they sell this at all hours.

Substitution of Ingredients

croquette recipes

The great advantage of making croquette recipes is that you can customize them as much as you like if you have the main ingredients.

The irreplaceable ingredients are flour and milk because they give consistency to the croquettes.

You can change the mushrooms with chicken pieces, ground beef, or even with vegetables.

For example, broccoli or cauliflower are great replacements for mushrooms due to their texture.

Try the fried cauliflower recipe as well if you like cauliflower and make yourself some delicious crispy vegetarian bites.

This is a traditional Spanish food, so you can also add other ingredients that are classic from other best Spanish tapas.

You can add chopped serrano ham, and chorizo, or make an aioli for dipping. Try the Spanish ham croquettes and the Spanish chorizo croquettes as well.

Give a try to the Spanish vegan potato croquettes as well, if you can’t get enough Spanish croquettes and want something meat-free.

As well as it happens with other Spanish appetizer recipes, the seasoning is mostly just salt and pepper, but you can add others if you want to.

For these Spanish croquettes, you can use smoked paprika, turmeric, onion, garlic powdered chopped parsley, or anything that you want.

But keeping it simple with salt and pepper is the best, this way the mushrooms get to shine.
