LAKE COUNTY, Ill. — A Lake County Sheriff’s K9 was injured on Sunday while capturing a suspect who was fleeing Wisconsin police into Northern Illinois.

K9 Dax

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy John Forlenza and his partner, a 9-year-old German Shepherd named Dax, have worked more than 300 cases together. But on Sunday, Dax was injured during an apprehension.

Deputy Chief Chris Covelli said Dax and his handler were called in to help arrest someone who was driving a stolen car from Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, over the state line into Zion.

“While this individual was fleeing he rammed into one of the Pleasant Prairie squad cars, which disabled the stolen car. The driver then fled on foot from the officers that were giving chase into a heavily wooded area,” Deputy Chief Covelli said.

Deputy Forlenza shouted a warning into the woods, captured on body camera video.

“Lake County Sheriff’s K9 – you’re under arrest – surrender immediately or I’ll send a dog to search. If the dog finds you he will bite you,” Deputy Forlenza stated.

With no response, Dax was released, found and bite the suspect, helping police make the arrest. But Dax received a neck injury during the apprehension.

Though Dax has seen a couple vets since Sunday, his prognosis remains unclear. As of Tuesday, he can’t put weight on his hind legs and swelling on his neck and spine has to go down before he can undergo X-rays and MRIs. Until then, he’s resting at home with his handler.

“We’re just hoping that he has a speedy recovery,” Deputy Chief Covelli said.

“It’s been a blessing, it’s been very rewarding, but we’re not done yet. I think he’s got a lot of gas left in the tank,” Deputy Forlenza said.
