Kagulu Hill

Kagulu Hill : Kagulu Rock was officially opened as a tourist and cultural site in Uganda on 11th May 2013 by the Busoga Tourism Initiative and the Uganda Tourism Board following the promise to diversify tourism products on the Uganda market by the Uganda Tourism Board.

Kagulu Hill was the first settlement area for the Bunyoro Basoga, led by Mukama. The rock is between two roads which fork at its foot, leading to Gwaya and Iyingo. The rock has a clear view of almost all Basoga, with steps making it easier for visitors to reach the top. Kagulu Rock has been for a long time a major adventure and tourist attraction in Eastern Uganda.

Such products that have been diversified in Uganda include; Gorilla tours, birding safaris, wildlife tours, mountaineering, cultural tours, primate tours which include the chimpanzees, adventure tours, among other tourist attractions that are already existing on the Uganda market.

Kagulu Rock rises to about 35,000 feet above sea level with outstanding 360 views of the beautiful surroundings. The hill is about 4 hours’ drive away from Kampala-Uganda`s capital and it is located in Buyende district approximately 30 km from Kamuli town.

Kagulu Rock has been famous for many people since 2003 who have been visiting the place to enjoy the challenging hike even when the place was less developed with limited facilities to use. In the year 2913, the Busoga Tourism Initiative in partnership with other stakeholders decided to officially open up Kagulu rock as a new tourism product in Uganda and this has since served a supplementary tourism experience on white water rafting, forest walks and cultural heritage among others.

The Basoga (local people) have a historical and cultural attachment on Kagulu hill as the first settlement for the first Basoga who originated from Bunyoro under the Kingship of Prince Mukama. It is believed that this place became his settlement area for the Buganda kingdom and because of its high altitude, Prince wanted great views of the surroundings.

Kagulu hill sits in between two roads which divide it for the way to Gwaya and Iyingo areas. Kagulu hill has since become one of the hills of Uganda that have been adapted for rock climbing opportunities and served tourism in Uganda

For those mountain climbers who are not keen about going the rough way, there are steps on one side of Kagulu hill which take you up to the pick but do not assume taking steps is just simple, it is as strenuous as finding was for self.
