Bucklandiella sudetica (Funck) Bedn.-Ochyra & Ochyra

Family: Grimmiaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Trichostomum sudeticum Funck
And many other synonyms as Racomitrium and Grimmia

Bucklandiella sudetica is morphologically variable. The sporophytes originate from step tips and not the stem apex, and the leaf cells are smooth or have low longitudinal ridges that appear as papillae in leaf cross section and are called pseudopapillae. The stem tips are not falcate secund, which separates it easily from Bucklandiella subsecunda. The costa of B. sudetica is thicker than that of B. subsecunda. The margin of B. sudetica is supposed to be 2-3 stratose, but most of the leaves on the specimen we photographed were only 1-stratose at the margin.

Many thanks to the University of Colorado Herbarium (COLO), Erin Tripp & Dina Clark for permitting us to photograph this specimen.
