He followed his father as head gardener at Wortley Hall in 1828 when his father transferred to the estate of George Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont, at Petworth House. In 1830, with Richard Gill Curtis, he filed a patent relating to the glazing of greenhouses. Subsequently, he left his job at Wortley Hall in 1837, and moved to Downham, in Norfolk, where he set up as a florist. In 1833 Harrison launched The Floricultural Cabinet and Florists' Magazine, a journal for professional and home gardeners, florists, and others which was published monthly from March 1833 until 1859. Each issue was illustrated with a beautiful color botanical plate, accurately portraying the characteristics of each flower. The journal contains articles on various aspects of flower cultivation, provided information on newly identified and rare plants, chronicled the meetings of various horticultural societies, presented evaluations of various new gardening techniques and equipment, etc. 'No other periodical work on floriculture or horticulture has ever reached so extensive a circulation, or enjoyed so large a portion of public patronage.' The journal was tremendously successful, selling more than 50,000 copies in its first nine months. After his death, his sons made it a weekly publication renamed the Gardener's Weekly Magazine and Floricultural Cabinet. Flowers depicted in this item include: Vol. XI Achimenes Grandiflora, Achimenes Hirsuta, Achimenes Multiflora, Camelia Japonica Alberti, Cineraria Celestial, Cineraria Ne Plus Ultra, Echites Atropurpurea, Echites Hirsuta, Echites Splendens, Fuschia Exoniensis, Fuschia Harrison's Goldfinch, Duschia Harrison's Madonna, Fuschia Handleiana, Nemophila Discoidalis, Pelargonium, Phlox Van Houttii, Ribes Albidum, Roellia Ciliata, Scutellaria Japonica, Tropaeolum Azureum, Tulop Groom's Victoria Regina, Tulip Tyso's Polydora.
