Brunei
Public broadcaster Radio Television Brunei (RTB) launched its radio and TV transmission in 1957 and 1975 respectively. Prior to Brunei Darussalam’s independence in 1984, RTB’s radio service had operated under the country’s Department of Broadcasting and Information.
By 1994, RTB’s radio service had five networks providing 100 percent coverage throughout the country. The five networks are Nasional, Pelangi, Harmoni, Pilihan and Nur Islam. RTB’s new digital radio facilities comprise five live studios and five production studios. RTB started its NetRadio in July 2001 by streaming all its radio networks on the Internet. RTB’s television programming consists of locally produced programmes, which makes up 60 percent of its local output. RTB also broadcasts imported programmes. In 1994, RTB launched its international television service known as RTB International, transmitting in Malay and English to the Asia-Pacific region via the Palapa C2 satellite.
RTB has a number of agreements with neighbouring countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. It is fully funded by the government while advertising revenue amounts to approximately five percent of its gross annual operating budget. It has 1,200 employees including part-timers. RTB’s transmission reaches an estimated 125,000 radio sets and 95,000 TV sets.
