LUNASCHI1, VICTOR HUGO MERLO ÁLVAREZ2 & CRISTINA DAMBORENEA3 División Zoología Invertebrados, Museo de La Plata, FCNyM, UNLP, Paseo del Bosque s/n, 1900 La Plata, Argentina. E-mail: 1lunaschi@fcnym.unlp.edu.ar; 2hugmerlo@fcnym.unlp.edu.ar; 3cdambor@fcnym.unlp.edu.ar Abstract A catalogue of type specimens of the Helminthological Collection of the División Zoología Invertebrados, of Museo de La Plata (FCNyM-UNLP), Argentina, is presented. It includes Platyhelmithes, Nematoda, Nematomorpha and Acanthocephala. The collection comprises type lots for 217 species: 90 nematodes, 50 digeneans, 28 Nematomorpha, 19 monogeneans, 17 turbellarians, 8 cestodes and 5 acanthocephalans. Specific names are listed systematically, followed by type host, type locality, specimens, collection number and bibliographic reference. Key words: Helminthes, catalogue, type material, Museo de La Plata Collection Introduction Natural history collections play an important role in the study and understanding of biodiversity. In this regard, type specimens are the base units of zoological nomenclature. The Invertebrate Collections of Museo de La Plata (MLP) of the Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo, Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina, are a significant resourse of information about the invertebrate (excluding insects) biodiversity of Argentina. The Helminthological Collection contained within the collections of invertebrates at MLP includes species of Platyhelminthes (both free-living and parasitic), Acanthocephala, Nematoda, and Nematomorpha. History and composition of the colletion The Helminthological Collection of the MLP, was established around 1970 and was based on the research work of Dr. Carola Sutton, primarily on nematodes of mammals. This collection began to grow, first by the great effort of the researchers of the Invertebrate Zoology Division, and then also by other researchers from different institutions of our country. During the last two decades the collection has grown rapidly. Today it is the biggest Helminthological Collection in Argentina, and one of the most important in South America, not only by the number of types specimens, but also for the number of vouchers specimens, representing a large fraction of the known Helminthological fauna of the region. All the material in this collection is organized according to lots and registered in an entry book. All the material of the collection is digitalized in a database, including record, taxonomy, locality, collection-event, biologicalevents (including host species and its systematic position, and site of infection in parasite species) and bibliographic elements. A first catalogue of slide preparation type and non-type specimens was published in 2000 (Sutton & Damborenea 2000). It included only the slide preparations, with a total of 106 species. Between them, the type material corresponds to 41 species. Subsequent to the publication of this summary, the collection has grown substantially and the number of types has increased significatively as well. Currently, the type specimens of 213 nominal species are deposited in the collection. Accepted by N. Dronen: 21 Dec. 2011; published: 20 Feb. 2012 1 TERMS OF USE This pdf is provided by Magnolia Press for private/research use. Commercial sale or deposition in a public library or website is prohibited. The purpose of this paper is to inform to the scientific community about setting of the heminthological collection of MLP by publishing a catalogue of the types deposited in it, up to 31 July 2011 and, to cope with the Recommendation 72F.4 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN 1999). Material and methods The specimens are stored in glass containers in 70 % ethanol (especially for nematodes and Nematomorpha) or as microscope slide preparations (especially for platyhelminths). All the material is available for consultation. Unless otherwise stated, all the material is in good condition. The catalogue is arranged taxonomically in phyla, families, genera and species, under the original spelling and combinations. Families, genera and species are arranged alphabetically. The information of each entry is presented in the following format: 1. Original genus-species combination with author(s), year of publication. Asterisk (*) denotes type species of the genus. 2. Type host: Species, author(s), and principal taxonomic group in brackest. 3. Site of infection in parasite or commensal species. 4. Type locality: Country, province or state, department, specific locality, coordenates. 5. Primary type status: Sex (if applicable), MLP catalog number. The categories for types used followed the articles 73-75 of the ICZN (1999). 6. Remark sections are inserted when necessary and include changes in synonymies and new generic combinations. 7. Reference(s) includes publications in which the species was described and those that mention type specimens in the MLP Helminthological Collection. Not with standing our efforts in finding type specimens that were cited in the literature as having been deposited in MLP Helminthological Collection, up to now some of them have not been found. The present catalogue lists only the types that were effectively deposited. Results There are a total of 217 species represented by primary types: 90 nematodes, 50 digeneans, 28 nematomorphs, 19 monogeneans, 17 turbellarians, 8 cestods and 5 acanthocephalans.
