Impact of proanthocyanidin-rich apple intake on gut microbiota composition and polyphenol metabolomic activity in healthy mildly hypercholesterolemic subjectsApples are a rich source of polyphenols and fiber. Proanthocyanidins (PAs), the largest polyphenolic class in apples, can reach the colon almost intact where they interact with the gut microbiota producing simple phenolic acids. These metabolites have the potential to modulate gut microbiota composition and activity and impact on host physiology. A randomized, controlled, crossover, dietary intervention study was performed to determine the broad effects of whole apple intake on fecal gut microbiota composition and activity. Forty heathy mildly hypercholesterolemic volunteers (23 women, 17 men), with a mean BMI (± SD) 25.3 ± 3.7 kg/m2 and age 51 ± 11 years, consumed 2 apples/day (Renetta Canada, rich in PAs), or a sugar matched control apple beverage, for 8 weeks separated by a 4-week washout period in a random order. Fecal and 24-h urine samples were collected before and after each treatment. The broad effects of apple intake on fecal gut microbiota composition were explored by the ...

A new antimicrobial anthrone from the leaf latex of Aloe trichosantha2014 •
Phytochemical investigation of the leaf latex of Aloe trichosantha by preparative TLC gave two closely related anthrones, aloin A/B (1) and aloin-6'-O-acetate A/B (2). The identity of the compounds was established from HRESI-MS, 1H, 13C, DEPT, HMQC and HMBC spectral and chemical data. Whilst aloin A/B occurs in several Aloe species, aloin-6'-O-acetate A/B was isolated for the first time. The isolated compounds inhibited growth of several bacterial and fungal pathogens with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) from 10 to 400 microg/mL and 800 to 1000 microg/mL, respectively.

In the present study, the effect of angular velocity on mass fraction per jet is evaluated using three dimensional numerical model. A steady state model with constant wall temperature is used to investigate the performance of seven jets impinging an airfoil leading edge cavity. The numerical simulation is conducted using ANSYS – fluent release 19.1. The study analyse the impact of jet location, jet Reynolds number and rotation number on flow behaviour and how they impact cross flow interaction. The results show that the amount of mass fraction depends mainly on channel size, jet size, jet location, rotation number and Reynolds number. The highest mass fraction is found for jets near the flow outlet while the lowest mass fraction is found from the jets in farthest distance from the outlet. Under angular velocity, that mass fraction increases with rotation number for the jet near the outlet due to centrifugal force, while decreases for the jets near the rotation axis. The rotation cau...
