The present paper deals with 174 species of 72 genera under 32 tribes and 20 subfamilies of Family Carabidae. During the study 551examples has been identified under 95 species and 36 genera. A total of 48 species and 12 genera has been recorded for the first time from Uttar Pradesh, out of which during study 22 species had been reported for the first time from Uttar Pradesh by Kushwaha & Hegde (2010, 2012 and 2013). A total 05 species has been recorded for the first time from India out of which during the study 02 had been reported for the first time from India by Kushwaha & Hegde (2013). Diversity, Abundance and Composition of Ground Beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) in Jhunjhunu District of Rajasthan, India

Background: Jhunjhunu district has semi-arid climatic condition which is favorable to flourish ground beetles. Diversity of ground beetles are beneficial to agricultural ecosystem as carabid beetles are prominent decomposers and reduce population of insect pest specially, caterpillars. The present study aimed to document diversity of ground beetles which will provide first even preliminary information needed for their conservation and use in integrated pest management program. Methods: Sampling was carried out in Jhunjhunu district from January 2021 to December 2021. Four sampling sites viz., Site-A (agriculture land), Site-B (Plains are relatively flat land which is dominated by grasses, herbs and shrubs), Site-C (rocky area) and Site-D (blanks of water bodies) were selected based on different habitats situation. Carabid beetles were collected using pitfall trap, hand picking and light trap and identified by valid taxonomic keys. Result: Diversity indices authenticated a good diversity and abundance of ground beetles in the district. A total of 956 individuals of carabid beetles, representing 28 species and 19 genera belonging to 11 subfamilies viz. Harpalinae (7 species), Trechinae (7 species), Brachininae (3 species), Scaritinae (3 species), Lebiinae (2 species), Paussinae (1 species), Anthiinae (1 species), Carabinae (1 species), Pterostichinae (1 species), Platyninae (1 species), Cicindelinae (1 species) under Carabidae family were collected and identified from various habitats of study area. On the basis of total number of individuals Dromius quadrimaculatus is the most dominant species and constituted 18.62% of total beetles followed by Chlaenius bimaculatus (8.05%), Tetragonoderus intermedius (7.64%) Lophyra differens (6.80%) and Bembidion ambiguum (5.02%). The highest diversity was observed at Site-B (H=2.72, J=0.83, M=4.43) followed by Site-A (H=2.72, J=0.83, M=4.08), Site-C (H=2.52, J=0.90, M=3.48) and Site-D (H=2.25, J=0.87, M=2.25).

Among insects, order Coleoptera, commonly known as beetles, are the most diverse group of organisms on earth. These beetles form an important component of our ecosystems. Many of them are serious pests of agriculture and forestry while some are extremely beneficial as nutrient recyclers and pollinators. From India, approximately 15,500 beetle species were reported till date (Ramkrishna & Alfred, 2007). Though several faunistic and taxonomic works on larger families of Coleoptera have been carried out regionally from different parts of West Bengal, Kalyani city has never been assessed for its beetle fauna. In addition to the State Fauna Series and the Records of the Zoological Survey of India, some of the notable works on Coleoptera fauna of West Bengal are of Banerjee (2014), Mitra (2014), Mitra et al. (2015, 2016, 2018), Sarkar et al. (2012, 2014, 2015, 2016a, 2016b, 2017, 2019), Basu et al. (2017), Ghosh et al. (2017), Saha & Raychaudhuri (2017) and Kharel et al. (2020). Based on this background, several surveys were conducted from March, 2019 to February, 2020 to document the Coleoptera fauna of Kalyani city. The city has an area of 29.14 km2 and is located in the Nadia district of West Bengal, India (22.9747° N, 88.4337° E). The city displays characteristic features of both rural and urban environment. It is surrounded by agricultural fields and pastures. Materials and methods Beetle specimens were collected using sweep nets, hand picking, pit fall traps and ultra violet light traps. The collected specimens were identified by examining the characters under stereozoom trinocular microscope (OLYMPUS SZX7) using the keys and descriptions available in Fauna of British India volumes on different families of Coleoptera, State Fauna series and Occasional Papers of the Zoological Survey of India, as well as other relevant and current literature. The current status of each species was checked in various databases like Catalogue of Life, GBIF, Coccinellidae of India etc. The collected specimens were deposited in the Entomology Laboratory of the Department of Zoology, University of Kalyani for further studies. The distribution records for each species were compiled from literature published till date.

A Study on diversity and abundance of coleopterans in Gujarat, India

The present survey gives the current information on Coleoptera diversity of Gujarat. This is the first comprehensive account on Coleoptera species diversity. Different locations were selected for the collection of coleopteran insects in whole of Gujarat, covering all the districts. Altogether, 177 species belonging to 117 genera under 32 families in the order Coleoptera are reported from the state of Gujarat. This study indicated that the diversity index, species richness and evenness of Coleoptera fauna in Gujarat were 1.44, 47.1and 0.63 respectively. This study is part of mission which was initiated under the research project sanctioned by Gujarat Biodiversity Board, Gandhinagar.

Beetles of the Family Carabidae are also known as Ground Beetles. They are elongate, oblongate, oval, flat, cylindrical and sometimes rounded. The size varies from 1.5 mm to 45-50 mm. These beetles are carnivorous in both larval and adult stages and very few are carnivore in larval stage and herbivore in adult stage. Most of them are nocturnal, hiding under any objects during day time and very few are diurnal. They live under stone and bricks,under bark, under logs, at light, vicinity of water and sand bank of water bodies etc. These beetles can be recognized by hind coxae fused to metasternum and not dilated; first abdominal sternite completely divided; antennae filiform, 11 segmented and generally segment 1-4 glabrous, rest pubescent; 5-5-5 tarsal arrangement. Family Carabidae comprises 34,275 species in the world (Lorenz, 2005), however nearly 2000 species are represented in India (Saha, 1995). These beetles are cosmopolitan in distribution. Carabid beetles were already reported from following districts of Uttar Pradesh state, Allahabad, Bareilly, Bijnor, Chandauli, Chitrakoot, Faizabad, Fatehpur, Gorakhpur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Lucknow, Saharanpur, Sitapur, Sultanpur and Lalitpur. STUDY AREA Uttar Pradesh is the fourth largest state of India with 75 districts. It is surrounded by Nepal, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi in the north; by Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh in west; by Chhattisgarh in south; by Jharkhand and Bihar in the East. Most of the land are dominated by plain land. The state was surveyed by different survey parties of Zoological Survey of India. During study the specimens from Allahabad, Agra, Auraiya, Azamgarh, Bahraich, Ballia, Barabanki, Bareilly, Basti, Chandauli, Chitrakoot, Deoria, Etawah, Fatehpur, Ghazipur, Gonda, Hardoi, Jalaun, Jhansi, Lakhimpur Kheri, Lalitpur, Lucknow, Mathura, Mau, Meerut, Mirzapur, Pilibhit, Rae Bareilly, Saharanpur, Shahjahanpur, Siddharth nagar, Sitapur, Sultanpur and Varanasi districts were collected and identified. MATERIAL AND METHODS During the study period, different districts were surveyed and specimens collected by different teams of Zoological Survey of India. The specimens collected and deposited in Coleoptera Section from earlier surveys were also taken into consideration. Specimens were collected by different method like sweeping, dusting, hand picking and at light. Preserved specimens were relaxed, set-pinned and labelled. Specimens were sorted out in different categories and identification was carried out with the help of available literatures i.e. Andrewes (1919, 1920, 1922, 1929, 1935) and others. SUMMARY The present paper deals with 174 species of 72 genera under 32 tribes and 20 subfamilies of Family Carabidae. During the study 551examples has been identified under 95 species and 36 genera. A total of 48 species and 12 genera has been recorded for the first time from Uttar Pradesh, out of which during study 22 species had been reported for the first time from Uttar Pradesh by Kushwaha & Hegde (2010, 2012 and 2013). A total 05 species has been recorded for the first time from India out of which during the study 02 had been reported for the first time from India by Kushwaha & Hegde (2013).
