Indoneesiella echioides (L.) Streem (syn. Andrographis echioides (L) Nees is a less known medicinal herb, commonly called 'False Waterwillow'. To some extent information about its phytochemistry is available; however, no data is available regarding the anatomy which is very important from pharmacognostic point of view. In order to standardize the drug, detailed morphological and anatomical investigations were made. Anatomical diagnostic features of Indoneesiella echioides (L.) Streem are-class A, B, C and D type of vessel elements in root and stem, scattered patches of included phloem in secondary xylem of root, secondary phloem cells dividing to form patches of minute stone cells; rays uni, bi and multiseriate with some pit cells in root; young stem with chlorophyllose cortical tissue on dorsiventral side; single large chloroplast in collenchymatous cells of ridges; stomata diacytic monocyclic and hemibicyclic. Cystoliths, raphides and styloides, long stalked glandular trichomes and various types of simple trichomes and glands present. Venation eucamtodromous with marginal veinlets forming loops and some free veinlets beyond loop. These characters can help to identify the drug material.

Hygrophito schulli (Buch-Ham.) MR and SM Almeida (Syn. Hygrophilo ouriculoto (K. Schum) Heing Asteracontho tongifolio (1.) Nees) is a reputed ayurvedic herb known as lkshura, lkshugandha and Kokilkasha. All parts of the plant are medicinally useful. To some extent information about its phytochemicals is available; however, no data is available regarding anatomy, which is very important from pharmacognostic point of view. ln order to standardize the drug, detailed morphological, anatomical (structure of root, stem and leaf, vessel elements of root and stem, leaf architecture, trichomes etc.) and dermatological features were studied. Hygrophilo schulli can be characterized on the basis of combination of characters like development of anomalous cambia in old stem, presence of abnormal stomata, isobilateral leaf, marginal veinlets free and forming loops and various types of crystals.

The anatomy, morphology and trichome distribution o f leaves of two medicinal plants: Harrisonia abyssi nica Oliv. and Spathodea campanulata P. Beauv. from Nigeria we re studied in order to understand the usefulness of these characteristics for systematic purposes as well as provide useful pharmacopoeial information in additi on to previous identification tests available on the spec ies. Some anatomical characters such as the number and shape of epidermal cells, number of palisade and spongy pare nchyma layers of the leaf blade, and the trichome t ypes provide information of taxonomical significance. The specie s showed variations in stomata types, epidermal cel l shape, size and trichomes morphology. Most of the characters es pecially trichomes were diagnostic and used for dis tinguishing taxa. Trichomes were mostly multicellular and gland ular on adaxial surface of H. abyssinica, on the tw o surfaces of S. campanulata, they were glandular and non-glandul ar. Stellate hairs were ob...

Anatomy of subterranean organs of medicinally used cardueae and related species and its value for discrimination2011 •
Numerous species of the Asteraceae, the composites, are famous for their use in both traditional and conventional medicine. Reliable anatomical descriptions of these plants and of possible adulterations provide a basis for fast identification and cheap purity controls of respective medicinal drugs by means of light microscopy. Nevertheless, detailed comparative studies on root and rhizome anatomy of valuable as well as related inconsiderable composite plants are largely missing yet. The presented study aims to narrow this gap by performing anatomical analyses of roots and rhizomes of 16 species belonging to the tribe Cardueae, of formerly and currently used drugs as well as their near relatives as potential adulterations (Carlina acaulis L., Carlina vulgaris L., Arctium lappa L., Arctium tomentosum Mill., Carduus defloratus L., Carduus personata (L.) Jacq, Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop., Cirsium vulgare (Savi) Ten., Cirsium erisithales (Jacq.) Scop., Onopordum acanthium L., Silybum mari...

Abstract. Mulani RM, Dhawle KS, Dhuldhaj UP. 2020. Pharmacognostic studies and anatomical peculiarities in medicinal plant, as Enicostemma axillare. Asian J Ethnobiol 4: 23-30. Pharmacognostic evaluations were carried out by plant material collection, preparation of herbarium; organoleptic properties, macroscopic characters, microscopic characteristics. For the physiological studies Transverse Sections (T.S.) of root, stem and leaves were taken and also powder analysis, physicochemical value determination such as total ash, water-soluble ash, acid-soluble and acid-insoluble ash were done. The distinguishing characters of Enicostemma axillare (Poir. ex Lam.) A. Raynal stem is the presence of parenchyma. Leaves microscopy indicates presence of anisocytic stomata, minor leaf veins, phloem transfer cells and numerous sclereids. Macroscopic study shows leaves and roots with glabrous-surface, and stem was tall simple to branch and maybe prostrate or ascending. Color variation indicates pr...
