The Incarnation is presented by Christian writers as the stumbling block par excellence that scandalizes their pagan interlocutors, and this is confirmed by a study of the anti-Christian treatises of Celsus, Porphyry and Julian. These authors raise three objections which rest on three characteristics of the divine nature: power, transcendence and universality. Why did God assume an incarnate form instead of intervening more directly, whereas his will alone would have been sufficient to accomplish man’s salvation? Secondly, how can God unite Himself with human flesh, whereas He is immutable and contact with a human womb implies defilement? The comparison between a passage from Augustine and a fragment of Methodius of Olympus on the fact that the Son of God is enclosed in a limited body subject to temporal mutations makes it possible to propose a textual correction of the fragment. The third objection concerns the spatio-temporal limits of the Incarnation and raises the question of the relationship between the particular and the universal: why did the Son of God become incarnate so late in time and in such a remote place? Celsus, Porphyry and Julian stumble over the idea of a God limiting Himself by entering into human history. This study compares the polemical positions of these three authors, while showing the similarities of their objections with those attributed to their opponents by a certain number of Christian authors such as Origen, Methodius of Olympus, Gregory of Nyssa, Macarios of Magnesia, Lactantius, Augustine, Jerome, Cyril of Alexandria.

At the end of the fifth century B.C.E., the character of Odysseus was scorned by most of the Athenians: he illustrated the archetype of the demagogic, unscru- pulous and ambitious politicians that had led Athens to its doom. Against this common doxa, the most important disciples of Socrates (Antisthenes, Plato, Xenophon) rehabilitate the hero and admire his temperance and his courage. But it is most surprising to see that, in spite of Odysseus’ lies and deceit, these phi- losophers, who condemn steadfastly the sophists’ deceptions, praise his rhetori- cal ability, his polutropia. The word polutropia is ambiguous: for Antisthenes, it means either “diversity of styles and discourses” or “diversity of dispositions, characters, or souls”. It is argued that the same distinction is implicitly at work in Plato’s Hippias Minor, where Socrates defends Odysseus’ polutropia against the pseudo “simplicity” of Hippias’ favourite hero, Achilles. However, whereas Antisthenes tries to clarify these different meanings, Plato’s Socrates exploits the ambiguity to confuse his interlocutor. Such a distinction sheds a new light on the Hippias Minor: Odysseus is polutropos in the first (positive) sense, while the sim- plicity of Achilles should be understood as a bad kind of polutropia. It provides an explanation for the first paradoxical thesis of the dialogue which many com- mentators do not admit as an expression of the true Socratic view, on the ground of its supposed immorality: that he who voluntary deceives is better than he who errs, for falsehood is, in one case, only in words, while in the other, it is false- hood in the soul itself. It is thus proposed that Odysseus’ skill in adapting his logos to his hearers was probably a model for Socrates himself. The analogy between the hero and Socrates is especially clear in Plato’s dialogues, which show the philosopher in an Odyssey for knowledge.

Personnalité borderline et tatouage : Hippolyte et le corps-en-disparition2018 •
Abstract Based on the analysis of a clinical case, namely a borderline patient displaying several self-realised tattoos, we'll broach three principal characteristics of borderline existence. They are instantaneity, ubiquity and a sense of disappearing-body. Given this original understanding of the trouble, the issue of tattoo practice in borderline people, as well as the very particular relationship they maintain with their own body and other people, will be discussed. We'll also highlight the dialectics between the objectification of the body, as an object which is likely to be manipulated and modified, and the objectivation of the body, as an object dotted with the special and determining power of being animated by a subjectivity. We'll end by emphasising how the borderline personality find its place and is, in a way, in tune with the postmodern evolution of our current society.
