Parvanachis obesa (CB Adams, 1845): A new record for the northern coast of Perú By Carlos Alberto Arias Avila, Biologist Address: Jr. Carlos Gutierrez Noriega 246 Lima 13. Perú. Email: carlos_arias_avila@yahoo.es Summary This is the first record a new columbellid for the northern region of Peru, Parvanachis obesa (CB Adams, 1845), a species with a wide distribution among the Caroliniana and Patagonian Malacologican Regions. Introduction Parvanachis obesa (CB Adams, 1845) is widely distributed from Virginia to Uruguay, Bermuda islands, typical of shallow water (Abbott and Morris, 1995), from the intertidal level of funds arena rock, corals, Thalassia, oysters reefs (Rodriguez et al., 2003). This distribution extends from the malacological region caroliniana, caribean to Argentina (Sabelli, 1982). Itccurs with some abundance in brackish waters, banks of oysters, sea grass beds. They are carnivores, epifaunals (Reguero, García-Cubas & Zuñiga 1991) Material examined CAA-662 (Fig 01), Caleta Cabo Blanco, El Alto, Prov. Talara, Región Piura (04 ° 15.1' Lat. S; 81° 13.9' Long. W), height 5.3 mm. A specimen collected in the intertidal zone, in gravel and under rocks, in May 2006 by Valentín Mogollón Ávila. CAA-713 (Fig 02), Caleta La Cruz, La Cruz, Prov. Tumbes, Región Tumbes (03° 37.8' Lat. S; 80° 35.0' Long. W), height 4.5 mm. A specimen collected by dredging at a depth of 10 m, in May 2005. Collected by Valentín Mogollón Ávila. Average height = 4.9 mm; diameter (Ø) average = 2.5 mm. CAA-735 (Fig N ° 03), collected by dredging at a depth of 30 meters, Boca del Toro, Panama East, (Height = 4.3 mm, Ø = 2.1 mm) Abbreviations: CAA: Carlos Arias Avila Collection Discussion Next page Prior page First page Last page Next page Prior page First page Last page Internet Hawaiian Shell News March 2011 Feature 8 Section Page 1 Discussion CAA-662 specimens (see Fig 01) and CAA-713 (see Fig 02) are not related to any known Peruvian species of the genus Parvanachis. They are small, white with orange-brown stains near the transverse suture with transverse lines of the same color at the back of the body (see Fig 01), or wavy lines of the same color, arranged in two bands on the body whorl (see Fig 02). Axial ribs on the 15 precorporal whorls that are slightly nodular at the top level, with no appreciable level on the dorsal side of the body whorl. Trerencised spiral lines at the interspace located between the axial ribs. There are small teeth at the outer lip.Ther protoconch is smooth.. Compared to the CAA-735 specimen (Fig 03) shows great similarity with respect to the axial and spiral ornamentation on spirals and protoconch whorls and also in the color and arrangement of spots and stripes, especially with the specimen from Caleta La Cruz.
