VOCABULARY
OF
INDIVIDUAL EXPRESSIONS AND PHRASES WHICH ARE VERY COMMON TO
THE SPANIARDS OF THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS.
FROM
FERDINAND BLUMENTTRIT.
With an appendix:
BIBLIOTHECA PHILIPPINA.
A well-arranged collection of a number of linguistic, geographic, ethnographic,
natural sciences and historical pamphlets and manuscripts with contents that
relate to the Philippines.
FOREWORD.
Although I have used all diligence on this my modest work, but for fear of the
public to come out with it, because of my shortcomings are too well known to
me. I'll make you aware of everything that the vocabulary is only meant to be
as a reference book for those too which the magazines that are published in
Manila and other works often take in hand. Anyone familiar with this lecture
will, even if he does not go the country, on each side at least once to one
expressive expression about which he can enlighten no Spanish lexicon is. It is
true that Buzeta, Cañamaque, Scheidnagel and Vila have their works one more
or less rich list of expressions that the jargon of Españoles filipinos and the
specifically Filipino literature are attached, but compare my vocabulary with
these directories and you will see that those lists do not give the questioner
everything. The latter is far from the case with my little work, man need only
read a few chapters in Guerra's "Viajes al Oriente" to immediately come across
some expressions that are missing in my vocabulary, because I even she could
not explain it to me. It's just a first attempt I just wish to get a successor soon,
the better one and could bring that in abundance. As the most valuable part of
the vocabulary, I consider the zoological provisions that I have special kindness
and kindness of Dr. Ing. A. B. Meyer owe, He also has a different relationship
with me in writing this work to Kathe and in such an exceedingly chivalrous
and selfless way willingness that I cannot find enough words to him at this to
express my sincere thanks. The works of the Spanish Botanist Blanco, Llanos,
Vidal and Jordana I took the scientific names of the plants listed in the
vocabulary; the botanist will be here native plant names in no other works in
such abundant abundance (there are even variants included) and so easily put
together for quick orientation find as here. Although I intend to wear it soon to
publish a geographical - statistical lexicon of the Philippines, so nevertheless,
for the sake of completeness, I have a peoples and landscape names with what
2
all those forgive me, which, like it I once went this way myself, suddenly in the
yellowed Order writings on one Comintana, Provincia de Ituy, etc., without in
the reference books or to get maps fast digestion. I still notice, class the
vocabulary of a layman in linguistics and Romance philology, why I have the
scholars of this branch of science please forgive me if she irritates the dilletants
according to the plant. I Hope you will recognize the good will, albeit the same.
The bibliographic part, too, shakes its head in some circles excite. Maybe you
will, in order to start with extras, It is not to be blamed that I do not have the
format and the number of pages for each work with led. Of course, that's a
mistake, which I'm quite good at look, but I console myself, that those who are
in-depth with to study the Philippines archipelago, forget about this mistake or
at least I'll forgive that here is the richest and most most complete collection of
references in the Philippines and Manuscripts available, which has been
published so far (see Pinelo, Leclerc and Vidal-Soler). That there is no question
of absolute completeness is, of course, and it would be undertaken with this
intention Do not even try to succeed one of those lucky ones in a big city
Rummaging with Muse in the rich library treasures of the big libraries Just
imagine my situation and you will tell me what I miss my pardon, for I live far
from the big libraries in a small town to every book I read from a distant library
I want to borrow and in which I only want to look at a few lines, I have to in
writing, and how often do I need books that are their rarity not to be sent
abroad at all. That under such circumstances especially the mineralogist and
geologist will miss much, is probably forgivable, and thankful I will be to
everyone who is so kind to me to draw attention to many gaps.l)

My address is: F. Blumentritt, Professor a, d. Communal High School in Leitmeritz, Bohemia (Autricbe,

In the Dutch, French and English literature should have escaped me a lot,
especially what the As far as dissertations and essays are concerned in
magazines, here too I ask every lucky person who can exploit these treasures,
the request, my directory, be it in the way of criticism, be it through letter
directed to me, kindly to complete. That I use with older printing units not all
the information given, the bibliophiles will be fine with me forgive them, but not
me, have Brunet always at hand; as much as I am in was able to do this thing,
has honestly happened. I also console myself that some scholars who are wellversed in the literature of the Philippines, as Mr. Pascual Gayängos, will find
quite a few older works that are quite his were unknown. The German readers
are printed on many in Manila Works and essays that do not appear in any
German language geographic sheet previously recorded.
The most valuable part of the book is the linguistic part, here too the lessons
will find a completeness, so far was not found in any publication. Plenty of
yield gave me that Directory in A. B. Meyer's The Negritos, as well as the two
editions of Leclerc and finally Vidal. Dr. Jagor was so gracious, me on several
3
to draw attention to linguistic works that were previously unknown to me. I
have ever the kind support of this scholar infinite a lot to thank. That Hofrath
Meyer also in the bibliographic part me assisted and was kind enough, every
one of my immodest To meet requests and requests kindly, I think I have
already mentioned. In any case, I would not have been able to publish this
