On the Phycitinae of Turkey:
updated synonymic and distributional list of species
(Lepidoptera) with some remarks

Abstract: On the Phycitinae of Turkey: updated synonymic and distributional list of species
(Lepidoptera) with some remarks. Priamus 18 (3): 130-154, 13 figs.
In this article, the difficulties encountered in the studies about Phycitinae are discussed. Totally 324
Phycitinae species of Turkey are presented for the first time in a synonymic and distributional list.
Among the species, two new provincial records and a new larval food-plant of Pempelia albariella
are mentioned. Original complementary illustrations are also given.

Studying on the Phycitinae species is not easy in various respects. Reliable revisional works
on difficult genera are not enough. For example, Roesler (1973, 1993) published only two volumes
of the palaearctic phycitine and some complementary papers on this group. Too schematic genital
drawings used in these monumental works apparently belong to non-professional persons.
Therefore, deciding about the identity of the species by using such drawings, is not always easy.
Currently, Roesler could not complete his task on this matter.
At the end of the last year, Slamka (2019) published the first part of the Phycitinae of
Europe. Although the title of the book is like this, it also contains important information about
species found in Central Asia, the Middle East, or even only in Africa. Although this case may seem
beneficial to the relevant readers, we are of the opinion that it is not correct in terms of the title and
the purpose.
Identification of the species based upon the external features is rarely possible. Preparing of
the male and female genitalia is usually the most reliable morphological method; therefore
recommended. However, genitalic preparation of some phycitine groups is not so simple, due to its
compact structure, strong contrast between the membranous and chitinous parts of the genitalia,
as well as poorly chitinized accesory organs.
In summary, to produce publication on this group is not easy. Within our scientific circle, it
can be said that no author can publish a work absolutely perfect. But it is also a reality that every
publication contributes more or less to science. It is important to see it, take into consideration and
respect to the work of each author. With this idea, we have prepared a revised list of the Phycitinae
of Turkey, based upon the info-systems of the Cesa2 and the Slamka’s last important publication.

Our present aim is to see the updated list of the Phycitinae of Turkey, before preparing
more detailed publications on some genera in near future.
In the present paper, totally 324 species are listed alphabetically, with chronologically
arranged synonymous names, and the distributional information of each species expressed as
codes.
Faunistically,
Asalebria
geminella,
Myrlaea
epischniella,
Neopristocerella
deltagrammella, Pempelia albariella, Pristocerella solskyi are discussed below from various
standpoints or new materials added. Neopristocerella deltagrammella and Pristocerella solskyi
are reported here as new for the fauna of Van Province. Besides, Onobrychis cornuta is given as
new larval food-plant of Pempelia albariella. Several complementary illustrations are also given
here for the first time.

In the updated list of the Lepidoptera of Turkey, Koçak & Kemal (2018: 284) reported this species
from Turkey (Bitlis, Hakkari and Van Provinces). Previously, Kemal & Koçak (2012: fig.14),
illustrated this species from Dez Valley [30Bc1] (Hakkari Province, SE Turkey). Koçak & Kemal
(2015: 91) listed this species from Hakkari Province. Kemal & Koçak (2017: 165) recorded this
species from Van Province (Bahçesaray) [65A], also with Map 12 (l.c., 220). Kemal & Koçak (2018:
186) reported this species from Zap Valley [30Bz] (Hakkari Province). Unfortunately, all these
publications were overlooked by Slamka (2019).
In the present paper, illustrations of this species (adult, male genitalia and tympanal organ) are
given from East Turkey (Van Province, Bahçesaray).

Remarks: This species was reported by the authors (Kemal & Koçak, 2014: 102; Koçak & Kemal,
2018: 304) from Amasya [05], Kars [36], Maraş [46], Sivas [58], and Van [65]. Unfortunately,
Slamka (2019) overlooked these publications. The caterpillar of this species feeds on Onobrychis
cornuta in the mountain steppe formation. This natural larval food-plant species is new record for
Pempelia albariella (Slamka, 2019). This species was reported from Artos [65Fz] and Gören
Mountains [65Nm] in Van Province, as well as Akçay (Kars Province [36Db] (Koçak & Kemal,
2018). Previously, this species was recorded by Osthelder (1935: 87) from the vicinity of Maraş as
Salebria albariella var. dilucida. Besides, Seven & Akın (2017) reported this species from Mescidli
(Sivas Province).
Material studied: 1♀. East Turkey, Van Province, Tuşba, Irerini Mt. 1960m (65Np1) ex larva on
Onobrychis cornuta (Fabaceae), 18.v.2014. Adult emerged on 19.vi.2014. M.Kemal collected and
reared in the laboratory with its natural food-plant.

Priamus is the first international serial publication of the Centre for Entomological Studies Ankara, established in 1981,
and appears in volumes at irregular intervals. Each volume is composed of parts. This serial is regularly and permanently
archived in the recognized international site, “The Internet Archive”, in accordance with the Rules of the International
Code of Zoological Nomenclature (Article 8.5.3.1).
It includes larger original articles of the research workers of the Centre, regarding taxonomy, morphology, bibliography,
check-list, catalogue of Insects, especially Lepidoptera, as well as papers on faunistic, ecological and distributional
researches. The publication languages are English or Turkish.
