Variation in the Reproductive Biology of Female Rabbitfish Siganus rivulatus with Histological and Ultrastructural Evidence2019 •
Background and Objective: Rabbitfish Siganus rivulatus is one of the ecologically and commercially important marine fish inhabiting Egyptian northwestern Mediterranean Coastal regions. Studying the reproductive biology of fish species is among the most important life-history parameters that researchers must establish. The present study was carried out to test the theory of variation in the reproductive biology of rabbitfish Siganus genus and determine the exact spawning season of Siganus rivulatus species. Material and Methods: Random monthly samples of wild fresh dead fish were collected from Alexandria (December, 2016 to November, 2017). Biometric measures (total length, weight, gutted weight and ovary weight) were carried out. The fish was dissected and ovarian samples were collected and weighed monthly (average n = 20) throughout the year to identify the macroscopic and microscopic features of different maturity stages, determine gonadosomatic index values and fecundity. Results: Monthly analysis of the maturity stages distribution and gonadosomatic index recognized one distinct peak in June, identifying the spawning season (late May to mid of July). The morphological appearance and histological examination of the ovaries together with the ultrastructural changes in the oocytes wall showed that this species is an annual synchronous oocyte developer and their release takes place over a short period. Conclusion: Siganus rivulatus has a short spawning period extending from late May to mid of July (the current study) with an annual seasonal variation depending on different environmental factors. This study recommends the determination of the exact timing of the spawning season for this fish species annually as a basic mariculture practice due to its ecological and economical implication.

Looking forward, looking back: animating magic, modernity and the African city-future in Nnedi Okorafor's Lagoon2017 •
Lagos has recently become the focus of much scholarly interest, with a strong emphasis placed on the city as crucible of global innovation. Rem Koolhaas, in his well-known formulation of Lagos has, for example, memorably theorised the city as an African megalopolis “at the forefront of globalising modernity.” Contemporary African artists have similarly begun, in recent years, to place Africa at the vanguard of planetary discourse, producing a new wave of cultural output that signals the continent as a site from which to imagine the emergence of future worlds. Salient to this growing body of work are the writings of Nigerian-American author Nnedi Okorafor, who writes in the register of “African science fiction.” This article takes Lagos as its focus by considering its futuristic representation in Okorafor’s novel Lagoon (2014). Drawing on John and Jean Comaroff’s theories of the city “as future lab to be learned from,” I suggest that it is from Okorafor’s account of Lagos, infused with a series of connections between magic and modern, city and sea, global and local, human and nonhuman, that the novel imagines the potential birthing of a new world order. Given the vital presence of nonhuman interlocutors in Okorafor’s text, this article concludes by arguing that Lagoon merits consideration within the growing field of Anthropocenic studies.

The clamour for sustainability in all spheres of development is more in the developed economies but the responsibility is no less for the developing economies. Efforts targeted at sustaining infrastructural development in Nigeria are deficient in context and formalisation. This paper therefore contributes to the efforts at formalising and contextualising sustainable infrastructural development in Nigeria. The paper relied on literature review for textual data in support of sustainable infrastructural development. The findings reveal the state of infrastructure development and approaches that are strategic to the development of sustainable infrastructure in Nigeria. The suggested approaches grinded on global best practice and made to reflect the peculiarity of the contemporary Nigerian environment. The paper advocates for a more committed government effort and an inclusive civil society participation in sustainable infrastructure development in Nigeria.
