In this work is reported for the first time the presence of Calliostoma lusitanicum F. Nordsieck et García-Talavera, 1979 (Gastropoda Calliostomatiidae) in the Mediterranean Sea. Present sightings widen the known distribution of this species, found in the Madeira Archipelago and Canary Islands. The relationship between C. lusitanicum and C. alexandrinum Pallary, 1912 is

Description of a new species of Calliostoma (Gastropoda, Calliostomatidae) from Southeastern Brazil2012 •

Three species in the gastropod genus Calliostoma are confirmed as living in Deep-Water Coral (DWC) habitats in the NE Atlantic Ocean: Calliostoma bullatum (Philippi, 1844), C. maurolici (Seguenza, 1876) and C. leptophyma Dautzenberg & Fischer, 1896. Up to now, C. bullatum was only known as fossil from Early to Mid-Pleistocene outcrops in DWC-related habitats in southern Italy; our study confirmed its living presence in DWC off Mauritania. A discussion is provided on the distribution of DWC-related calliostomatids in the NE Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea from the Pleistocene to the present.

The deep-water mollusks collected during the Marion Dufresne (MD55) expedition to the southeastern Brazilian coast in 1987 have been studied in several recent works. The present paper lists and diagnoses 19 species belonging to the vetigastropod families Calliostomatidae, Colloniidae, Margaritidae, and Solariellidae. A new species, Calliostoma valkuri sp. nov., is described. It is mainly characterized by a very short teleoconch I, with limits marked by conspicuous varices and sculpture consisting of 3 spiral threads; sculpture of the teleoconch II consisting of spiral cords with thorn-like projections; and the presence of two strongly marked cords on the median portion of the whorls. Based on the MD55 samples and complementary specimens from other expeditions, the following species have their geographical and/or bathymetrical range extended: Bathymophila euspira, Calliostoma gemmosum, Calliostoma rude, Callogaza watsoni, Gaza compta, Falsimargarita terespira, Homalopoma boffii, Lame...
A new species of Callochiton, C. stefaniae n. sp., is identified in the framework of investigations aimed to better characterise the Strait of Messina benthic ecosystem. The new species, found in a peculiar facies of hard bottoms densely colonised by the hydrocoral Errina aspera (Linnaeus, 1767), is morphologically distinct from the co-generic Callochiton septemvalvis (Montagu, 1803), living in the Mediterranean Sea and along other European coasts, and C. doriae (Capellini, 1859), living only in the Mediterranean Sea.

In an ongoing study on deep-water Vetigastropoda from SE-NE Brazil, the remarkably similar appearances of two supposedly unrelated species drew our attention. The description of Calliostoma frumari García, 2007 was based on four empty shells collected 37 km off Key West, Florida Keys, USA, by a private expedition. Watson’s (1879) description of Basilissa costulata, a seguenziid species widely distributed in the Western Atlantic, was based on three empty shells collected by R/V Challenger (Fig. 1E–H) type locality Challenger sta. 24, 18°38’30”N, 65°05’30”W, off Culebra Island, St. Thomas, 713 m); the species was later transferred to the genus Ancistrobasis Dall, 1889. As we argue here, based on our examination of a substantial number of specimens (including types), both names were attributed to a single entity, which turns out to be a morphologically variable species.

No longer so common: findings of Calliopaea bellula d’Orbigny 1837 (Gastropoda: Sacoglossa) and Tayuva lilacina (A. Gould 1852) (Gastropoda: Nudibranchia) along the central-eastern coast of Sicily (Ionian Sea)The present note documents the finding of two species of marine heterobranch seaslugs along the central-eastern coast of Sicily (Italy, central Mediterranean): the sacoglossan Calliopaea bellula and the nudibranch Tayuva lilacina. These two species show a wide geographical range (C. bellula is present from Norway to the Black Sea, while T. lilacina is a cosmopolitan species) and in the literature were considered common species. However, in the last years, the number of findings of these species is decreasing, at least in the Western Ionian Sea, an area where these species seem to be currently rare. As documented for other Mediterranean areas, the reason for this decline in the number of marine heterobranch species might be attributable to a change in the current regime or to an increase in anthropogenic impacts around the coastal areas.
