Brandied Cherries

Homemade brandied cherries are perfect for dropping into cocktails or adding to desserts. They retain their natural cherry flavor which improves with time. There will be no more leaving a cherry behind in the bottom of your Manhattan, old fashioned, or whisky sour glass when you’re finished with these cherries!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup white sugar

  • 3/4 cup water

  • 1 star anise pod (optional)

  • 1 cup brandy

  • 1 pound fresh sweet or sour cherries, pitted

Directions

  1. Heat sugar, water, and star anise in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally, until sugar has dissolved, 2 to 3 minutes. Allow to cool for 10 minutes; stir in brandy.

  2. Pack cherries into clean jars; pour syrup over the cherries, making sure they are submerged. Cover the jars, move to the fridge for at least 1 day before using, and keep stored in the fridge.

Cook's Notes:

When adding brandy, taste as you go to be sure the syrup is to your liking, and make adjustments if necessary.

If you’re a cherry juice drinker, feel free to substitute cherry juice for water for more cherry flavor. You can skip the star anise (I use Badia®, very inexpensive), but it does give a unique flavor to the cherries.
