Tia and Tamera Mowry were two of the few young Black girls on TV that I grew up with. Over the weekend, Tia decided to take a trip down memory lane and evoke my nostalgia by posting images of the twins from the late '90s and early 2000s — and I can't get over how laid their silk presses were back then.
On June 10, Tia posted seven throwback photos from the late '90s and early aughts on Instagram with the caption, “Take two on a trip down memory lane of me and @tameramowrytwo iconic 90’s red carpet looks… Fashion is so cyclical, like the leather trench coats, the long skirts, the capris! I feel like I see outfits that are similar all the time on ig nowadays… But I gotta know, which outfits are your favorite 👀”
The first of the seven photos featured the sisters at the 1998 Hurlyburly film premiere in Los Angeles. The duo was wearing knee-high black boots with leather jackets (Tamera's was a fiery red, while Tia's was black), minimal makeup, and the most glorious of silk presses. I need all the details on who styled their hair and how it was done because not a single hair was out of place; it was as if their hair was totally humidity-resistant. Their silk presses were doing their damn thing at that premiere and the many other red-carpet events the sisters attended back in the day.
Tia included a photo of the twins backstage at the Fall/Winter 1999 Girls Rule! Fashion Show. The sisters looked stunning with dark lips and their silky straight hair. Tia's hair was covered with a white winter hat while Tamera's hair was left unstyled.
For the 5th annual Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards, which is the last photo in Tia's slideshow, the sisters stepped onto the red carpet with cropped tops and flared maxi skirts in different colors; Tamera wore a white top with a bronze skirt, and Tia stuck with an all-black ensemble. Their hair, as usual, looked impeccable and had a gorgeous sheen to it. Tamera's hair was styled with a simple middle part. As for Tia's hair, a front section was slicked towards the back and pinned in a style similar to the iconic 2000s pouf.
Tia asked her Instagram followers to shout out their favorite outfit of the seven looks, and honestly, it's too hard to pick. But if I had to choose, it's either their look from the Fall/Winter 1999 Girls Rule! Fashion Show or the 5th Annual Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. Even so, that glossy hair will always be the star of the show in my heart.
