Noah Syndergaard will be the Mets’ Opening Day starter, Jacob deGrom to pitch second game

Today, the New York Mets announced that Noah Syndergaard will be their Opening Day starter on March 29 against the St. Louis Cardinals at Citi Field. This will be Syndergaard’s second Opening Day assignment following his start last year against the Atlanta Braves. With his second start in a row, Syndergaard becomes the first Met starter to pitch on consecutive Opening Days since Johan Santana did so from 2008 to 2010. Syndergaard will also be the tenth Mets pitcher to start on multiple Opening Days, joining names such as Tom Seaver, Dwight Gooden, and Al Leiter.

It was also announced that Jacob deGrom would follow Noah Syndergaard and start game two of the 2018 season on March 31. This bit of news is a good sign as it appears that, as of now, all things are shaping up nicely and deGrom should be healthy and ready for the start of the regular season without any delays.

Mickey Callaway also noted that the team has no problem putting Syndergaard and deGrom back-to-back in the rotation. Some speculated that the two would be split up in order to protect the bullpen from too much wear and tear, but it appears that isn’t a major concern for the skipper.
