To be perfectly honest I bought this mouse to cannibalise the internals to fix an Advent branded mouse I bought years ago. Even from the pictures I could tell that the internals would be the same as my Advent mouse; its been rebranded and the shell redesigned several times over the years (but the layout has remained EXACTLY the same). For those of a curious nature, why did I use it to repair my old mouse and not just use this one? Well, the old mouse shell matched the colours of my old laptop and my new laptop, this mouse didn't! Although the white scroll wheel in a black and silver shell does look a bit odd. lol
So anyway, in a weird twist, I'm going to be half reviewing this mouse and half reviewing my old mouse that the newer mouses internals now reside.
Aesthetically this mouse looks cheap and feels cheap. The old mouse was all plastic too but it didn't have the cheap creaky plastic feel this one has. But then again, this one is cheap so you're getting what you pay for. Having said that it doesn't, in any way, affect its performance as a mouse. It just doesn't feel that nice under your hand.
This version is practically the same size as my old mouse, and its probably just on the limit for being truly practical as long as you haven't giant Hulk like hands. This, along with the internally retractable cable, makes it the absolute ideal travelling mouse. The internal retractable cable is a nice touch as it keeps it tidy when its stowed away in a bag. It also means there is no ugly external cable reel waiting to get snagged on something in your bag and ripped away from the mouse when you pull it out.
Cheap plastics aside, it actually functions rather well as a mouse given its diminutive size. The laser tracking is perfectly reliable on all sorts of surfaces (except black glossy ones it seems) and the selectable DPI (up to 1600) makes it, at a pinch, not a bad little portable gaming mouse. Its no million button, million DPI extravaganza but it will get you through a boring meeting/presentation/hotel stay!
The buttons all have nice definite clicks to them and the scroll wheel has, as well as its own click function, left and right push functions (although I've never tried them, I just used the standard installed mouse drivers which, at the time, didn't support the left/right wheel push).
Oddly, even though the title includes "for Mac" and nothing is mentioned in the description about Windows, it will, being a standard USB mouse, work quite happily with any Windows machine too.
Overall a great little mouse, even if the creaky plastics let it down a bit.
By the way, this mouse is getting increasingly difficult to find and as the stock here says there are only two left (there was 4 until I bought 2, one as an immediate donor, the other as a future donor!) I'd say don't buy them so I've got a supply of further donors. Actually I take it all back, this mouse is rubbish. DO NOT BUY! ;) hahahahaha
