Product Description
Ex-Beatle Ringo Starr, Dennis Quaid, Barbara Bach and Shelley Long band together in a hilarious love story for the ages'the stone ages! With an all-star cast and fun special effects, this cult comedyclassic is a "cheery, playful" (The New York Times) romp through BC that "aims for belly laughs and gets them" (Variety)! Prehistoric life is tough for poor, lovesick Atouk (Starr). As the smallest and weakest caveman of his tribe, he is unable to win the heart of the beautiful Lana (Bach) and is banished from the cave by Lana's mate, Tonda (NFL star John Matuszak), the hulking chief of the tribe. Forced to wander the ancient wilderness, Atouk meets a variety of unlikelyallies who, after hearing his story, want to help him get back in with his clan. And before Atouk knows it, he's the chief of his own tribe of misfits! Leading his rag-tag band of oddballs into battle, Atouk has one mission in mind: to knock Tonda off his throne and carry Lana away by her hair!

The film features some-to-be stars: Dennis Quaid (Lar)& Shelley Long (Tala). Other actors include Jack Gilford (Gog), John Matuszak in grand form (Tonda) & the well endowed Barbara Bach (Lana). The film centers on Atouk & the band of misfits he puts together. He is cast out of his own tribe by Tonda because Atouk is always trying to get with Lana. Later he finds Lar who becomes his best friend. Later they come across Tala & Gog. Gog is blind & this leads to some memorable moments. We even get an unrecognizable Richard Moll (Bull Shannon/Night Court) as the Abominable Snowman.
Caveman falls into the same category as Airplane! released the year before. It's a parody that spoofs other films or situations that could only happen the caveman way. The film can be played in three different languages (why?): English, French & Spanish. It also has subtitles (again, why?) in the same three languages. Actually, you can pretty much enjoy this film without any audio except for the jam session.
It's a great film that I never fail to enjoy. Highly recommended. It also has two versions of it because it's a two-sided disc. One is the widescreen & the other is standard mode.
For people who used to watch this in the 80s with their siblings and parents, this DVD is priceless. It brought me back to so many viewings and shared laugh sessions as we re-enacted scenes. My mom still loves to bust out her Tonda imitation, which is kinda scary.
I had my kids watch this with my dad when he came over for a visit and it kept their attention the whole time. After a few appearances of the monsters, they'd yell "MACHA! MACHA!" at the cavemen as a warning.
There was so much that I hadn't understood or perhaps just forgotten, but now that I watch this with a set of adult eyes, I catch a lot of the camp factor that makes this such a great movie. For example, the movie establishes its goofiness right off by setting the time of the movie as "1 Zillion Years Ago" and then stating that the date is "October 9". Later, they meet the Asian caveman and he tries to teach them English, but they take him for an idiot and go right back to their simple caveman language.
Now if you'll excuse me, it's lunchtime. I've got to go find some ool.
Ringo Starr played a caveman named Atouk, a caveman so low on the totem pole he was forced to taste new food. Still, he didn't let it get him down; he lusted after the well endowed Lana (Barbara Bach-who was and still is his wife, according to Google).
Lana only had eyes for the tall, muscular Tonda.
There are several interesting scenes: discovering and stealing fire; the creatures who crow at dawn and bay at the moon; losing Ta; the big fight scene at the end.
But even before then you'll see a sing-a-long around the campfire, and a cold, dejected monster (Richard Moll) who just wanted to play.
Some things just haven't changed, no matter how matter how many years have passed.
