Economics teachers often work by themselves or in small departments. This can mean they are forced to plan a lot of lessons from scratch with limited scope for shared planning or collaboration.

Even as teaching becomes more research-informed, there is still the problem of having to work out how this best applies when teaching Economics, especially when there has been limited training in this.

This can mean teachers are forced to adopt a trial-and-error approach, attempting to implement generic teaching and learning tips into economics lessons.

Teachers plan each explanation individually, only learning what common misconceptions are through the painstaking experience of seeing puzzled expressions on multiple pupils’ faces over the years. This book aims to change that.

By looking at what the latest cognitive science research tells us about how pupils learn and crucially how that can be implemented in economics lessons, this book provides a short-cut to that trial-and-error approach.

While the book summarises what the research tells us about pupil learning, this is fundamentally a ‘doing’ book. It is packed with practical examples of how research can be implemented in Economics lessons looking at explanations, misconceptions, assessment, curriculum and much more.

About the Author

Yousuf Hamid is Head of Economics at a secondary school in London. After growing up and studying economics at university in Glasgow, he relocated to London where he worked as an economic analyst for a large financial services firm. Keen to make more of a difference in society, he left this job and went travelling spending time volunteering in several schools along the east coast of Africa. Inspired by the joy of teaching, he later changed careers and trained to teach with Teach First. He has taught Economics at GCSE and A-Level in several inner-city schools in London and is a passionate believer in economics education as an entry point for pupils to truly understand the world in a way that only an understanding of economics can provide.

Economics Teacher - UK
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read for economics teachers
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 1, 2022
Yousuf Hamid has done an excellent job in this book of summarising a wealth of aspects of pedagogical theory and applying it in context of teaching economics. For the time-poor teacher of this subject, this book is a great gift and enables the reader to quickly appreciate how they could improve their practice.

Very few books exist to support economics teachers to improve, and this is certainly the best I have read. I especially enjoyed aspects relating to curriculum choices Yousuf has made and these have inspired me to explore where I can further extend curriculum in my school to cover more hinterland in particular.

Already recommended the text to a colleague who is new to teaching the subject and he is finding it very helpful too!

Highly recommended for any economics teacher, and especially for those with little prior knowledge of evidence-informed practice and those who are new to teaching economics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much Needed!

Really enjoyed this book. Lots of ideas to try out. The focus of the book is on applying evidence based approaches to teaching, and in this case, focused on Economics. The approaches could equally be applied to related subjects, such as Business. I was particularly interested in developing students’ application and evaluation skills. There are some good suggestions on how to do this. I liked the section on common misconceptions and how to deal with them. The books makes the link between our subject and latest research clear. Well recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear and efficient overview of educational research as applied to Economics teaching

Slim volume which swiftly and deftly achieves what it sets out to do - apply some of the findings of recent boom in the dissemination of educational research directly to Economics teaching (and to some extent, Business).
Ideal for new teachers in a subject which, as the author points out, can often be a solo effort in schools.
