2-WAY BOOKSHELF LOUDSPEAKER

COMPACT BUT POWERFUL

The Chora 806 loudspeaker showcases meticulous manufacturing and design. Let yourself be transported by the delightful, dynamic musical quality emitted by its 6 1/2” (16.5cm) bass/midrange speaker driver, equipped with the exclusive Focal Slatefiber cone. Alongside the TNF Aluminium/Magnesium tweeter with its silky treble, the “slate” colour of the speaker driver makes it an attractive yet high-performance solution.

  • Bookshelf speaker drivers with exclusive Slatefiber cone
  • Optional stand available
  • Sleek, modern design that blends perfectly into interior living spaces
  • Tilted for Time Alignment
  • Developed and manufactured in France by Focal

SOFT AND PRECISE TREBLE

The surround linking the dome to its stand uses a memory foam material called Poron. This surround is directly derived from the Utopia’s famous Beryllium tweeter and reduces distortion by a third between 2,000Hz and 3,000Hz, the ear’s high-sensitivity range. The spatialisation and very low directionality of the inverted dome allow silky trebles to be heard from any point in your listening room.

PERFECTLY BALANCED SOUND

Slatefiber technology, exclusive to Focal, involves the use of recycled, non-woven carbon fibres applied as a sandwich between two layers of thermoplastic polymer. In their quest for perfection, Focal engineers have opted to use non-woven carbon fibres, all pointing in the same direction to achieve even greater rigidity and better damping. Manufactured in the Focal workshops using an ultra-modern industrial tool, the “slate” effect of the cone provides better damping and rigidity, but also lightness – the three “essentials” of a good speaker driver.

A SLEEK, MODERN DESIGN

The Chora range offers a modern design, the slate colour of the Slatefiber cone adding a final refined, authentic touch. The stand (optional) is tilted for Time Alignment which provides an optimal soundstage, more focused on the listener.

The speaker for smaller rooms

Designed for bookshelf or, ideally, standmount placement, the Chora 806 speakers are ideal for stereo sound in smaller rooms. They also make excellent satellite speakers within a high-end AV speaker system. Thanks to their front-facing bass port, these stylish Focal speakers work well placed closer to a rear wall than usual.

Slatefiber cone for balanced sound

The three characteristics required for smooth, natural sound from a speaker driver are rigidity, lightness and damping. Focal’s impressive new Slatefiber cone hits all three targets – and then some. Using non-woven, carbon fibres, sandwiched between layers of thermoplastic polymer, the woofer cone provides the perfect composition for smooth, precise sound – whatever the type of music.

TNF tweeters for smooth precision

Derived from the reference Focal Utopia’s Beryllium tweeter, the TNF tweeters use aluminium and magnesium with Poron suspension for an exceptionally smooth yet detailed sound. The Poron surround reduces distortion at a point critical to human hearing, giving silky-smooth treble. The classic Focal inverted dome is also present – helping to give a broader spread of sound in your room.

Sleek style – just choose your colour

Crisp, contemporary design makes these speakers stand out, without jarring. The crisp edges contrast with the magnetically attached, circular grille. Choose between black, dark wood and light wood finishes for a style that best suits your room.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best sounding speaker I've heard for under $2K
Reviewed in the United States on 31 March 2023
Style: 826Size: PairColour: Dark WoodVerified Purchase
This review will be short and sweet. I was skeptical at first because of what I mostly read about these Focal Chora speakers. The reviews suggested that the speakers have a lot of treble, detailed midrange, and very little bass. None of that sounded appealing to my audio tastes (except for the midrange). I'm more partial to a warmer and bassier-sounding speaker like the Wharfedale Linton (which I also own). But my living room has very high ceilings and the Lintons failed to fill the living room with sound to my liking (although if I sat at a certain spot and used a sub, the Wharfedales were magical, especially with vocals; yet, the stereo imaging left me wanting more in the living room).

And although I read the Focal Chora lacked bass, I also kept seeing reviews that stated it imaged like few other speakers in its price range and that you could clearly hear where instruments were set up in the recording. A subwoofer would remedy any lack of bass. I still had worries, however, about possibly shrilly highs. I decided to take a chance on my first Focal. And I'm happy I did!

First, the way the Focal speakers sit on slates that angles them upward (I can't explain this in technical terms) seems to give it stereo imaging in spades! The sound fills my living room (high ceilings and all)! Now, it is true the bass sounded almost nonexistent in the first couple of listens, but I am a staunch believer in burn-in! As I put more hours into the speakers playing music, the bass started to open up. The speakers weren't bass cannons, but that deepness and subwoofer range wasn't missing either. I have an Emotiva BasX TA2 integrated amplifier. When I boosted the bass and bass-sub tonal controls in that amplifier a bit, the bass really showed itself and blended well with the other frequencies (always providing the right deepness of sound that is in the actual recording). And then I added an old small 8-inch Cambridge subwoofer to the mix, and wow! This bass doesn't shake the house or rattle the windows, but it mixes well with the whole sound spectrum. And the treble calmed down some too after burn-in.

The whole speaker turns out to be superb in imaging, clarity, cohesiveness, and filling up the room. I wouldn't say the speakers are too cool (definitely not heavily warm-sounding either), but they are right in the middle. The details of instruments I have never heard in any other floor-standing speaker I've owned. The drumkit, for example, sounds like it is one spot on the floor, and you hear marvelous details from the kickdrum, snare, tom toms, and cymbals. The whole sound just envelops you into the music, and I can't think of any speakers I've heard that do this so well (and I own B&W Nautilus 804s, the Wharfedales I mentioned earlier, Q Acoustics 3050s, and the Emotiva B2+). Now, I love different sound signatures from speakers (I actually moved the Wharfedale Lintons to my bedroom and they sound like magic there), but the Focal Chora is the main one I can't wait to get home and listen to.

I really don't think you have to spend thousands of dollars to get a top audiophile speaker that can compete with the big boys. This Focal speaker can compete with many of them that I've heard in the $5K-$10K range. It may be the best audiophile speaker out there for one who is on a budget. And the speakers also made me curious about Focal's headphones. I picked up the Clear model, and I'm having a similar experience with this headphone.

If the Focal Chora 826 stays under $2K, I don't believe you can beat it for that price (although I believe this speaker will be discontinued soon). Happy Listening!

(By the way: I mainly listen to jazz, but gospel, blues, classic r&b, classic rock, reggae, neo-soul, house music, and some hip hop also hit my turntable and cd player).

Update 05/10/2023: I've gone from an Emotiva integrated amplifier to the new Yamaha R-N2000A Hi-Fi Network Receiver/Integrated Amplifier! All I can say is WOW! The Chora speakers are very happy, and the sound reflects that observation. Spacious, natural sounding, detailed and weighty (especially more in the bass) musical bliss!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible as nearfield speakers for music and games, passable for home theatre
Reviewed in the United States on 11 September 2021
Style: 806Size: SingleColour: Light WoodVerified Purchase
Gear: SMSL SU8 RCA ->SMSL DA-9 (50 watt a channel Infinium with sub output) -> Focal Chora 806 in 2-3 foot nearfield at desk. Angled inward 20 degrees and 6 feet apart from each other.

Sensitivity: These are easy to drive. I'd go for some headroom but you don't need more than 40 watts a channel to comfortably drive these without any distortion. I went with the DA9 because the power is very clean and well controlled with a good implementation of a sub out. The power draw is a bit spiky so I'd avoid amps that can't take some voltage spikes or older receivers as you could damage the speakers.

Treble: Really great treble extension and detail. Cymbal splashes have great attack and speedy decay. Plenty of air without too much elevation at 4-8k.

Mids: Somewhat forward in the lower midrange and very forward in both male and female vocals. It reminds me a lot of the hd 650 effect on vocal isolation. These are really good at pulling vocals forward. The detail retrieval is decent in the mids but not as good as in the treble.

Bass: These are fairly flat and controlled in the bass. Extension is flat until around 95-100hz with a good 8 db dropoff to the spec 58hz. This makes these speakers a really good candidate for 2.1 setup with a larger subwoofer. I'm personally using a 12 inch Klipsch and it does a great job. Crossover at 90 and fairly low gain. Helps a lot with metal, rock, and EDM.

EQ: These by no mean 'need' EQ but they area bit bright leaning for metal in particular. The detail and texture is suitable but I used the following filters to warm things up just a tad and it works great without any bloat or loss of detail in nearfield:
70hz: 1.28 gain at .3 Q
130hz: 1.28 gain at .7 Q

Soundstage: Super wide with decent verticality. Passable depth with some smearing past 8 feet.

Imaging: Strong in nearfield, kind of off in my home theatre as the soundstage is actually really wide. The woofer dispersion is wild. Reminds me of how the hd 800s exaggerates it's soundstage to the point that imaging within a game or movie becomes inaccurate. In music this is fine but can be somewhat disorienting in games or movies. It feels more realistic in nearfield.

Overall: I would avoid these for home theatre setups but the texture and detail and nearfield is excellent. These keep up with some of my 3-4k headphones in terms of detail and texture. The extension is poor with fallout around 100hz so a decent sub is pretty much a must. Luckily that falloff makes the cross over prettier simple and leads to lower distortion.

These are too pricey for most home theatre setups and are a bit bright for movies. The detail and texture is incredible for games and music. I think they are better in nearfield because that plays to their strengths. I think there are much better options for home theatre or even general use at greater than 8 feet. They are easy to drive but benefit from some headroom as their power draw is a bit spiky.

5.0 out of 5 stars Focal Chora 816 - Super bei Audiomativ (Allendorf)
