In *Vogue’*s “American Experience” (May 2010), archetypes of fashion are given modern updates. As the Gibson Girl—the late-Victorian era’s ideal of female independence—supermodel Daria Werbowy sported a voluminous coiffure that is at once bold and flirty.

The original bohemian fashions of the 19th and early 20th centuries were a mélange of multicultural references. For a contemporary twist, Palau bedecked Sasha Pivovarova with a crown of ribbons, netting, and pins that evokes geisha glamour (Vogue, “American Experience,” May 2010).

Palau and his team created all of the hairstyles for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2011 Costume Institute exhibition, “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty,” including these severe, warrior-like headpieces topped with a single metal spike.
