Located in a quiet corner of Kerala, Palakkad is home to one of the best preserved forts in the state.

History

For centuries the region was the scene for various invasions and the granite fort built by Hyder Ali of Mysore in 1766 exemplifies this turbulent past. The British influence reached here a few years later when the fortifications were taken over and modified in 1790.

Today Palakkad is a tranquil place to stay — a little off the beaten track, and a rewarding addition to a south India itinerary.
