Human Rights Guide 2022 - the year in review

The Human Rights Guide is a project that aims to educate and inform people about their rights by developing a universal, focused and simple online human rights self-help and education platform - the Human Rights Guide - targeted at broader sections of society. It combines human-centred content and visual education elements to enhance perception and learning.

Human Rights Guide was expanded and updated with new content during 2022 in Latvia and in 5 EU countries - Estonia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Slovakia and Slovenia. More in-depth sections were developed for a number of themes, including new themes adapted and translated, and new summaries of European Court of Human Rights judgments.

To coordinate the development of the Human Rights Guide and to train experts, 3 working groups were organised in Riga in 2022 with the participation of representatives of all the Guide's partner countries.

During 2022, the content of the Guide website, the number of participating partner countries and the number of users increased significantly and, in order to ensure the proper functioning of the platform, significant functional and visual improvements were made to the Guide website, including the creation of new content sections with filter and search options, ensuring usability, accessibility and a user-friendly environment.

The implementation and expansion of the Guide's publicity and visibility activities continued in 2022. In order to reach a larger audience, social media accounts were created for the Guide on Instagram and Facebook, where the Guide's content has been regularly shared online since September 2022.

As a result of the expansion and publicity activities, the number of visitors and users of the Human Rights Guide increased significantly. During 2022, the Guide page visitor count increased by 143% compared to 2021. Comparing all country platforms - Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Bulgaria, Slovakia and Slovenia - the Latvian page saw the highest number of visitors, reaching around 40% of the total number of visitors to the Guide pages in 2022.

Since the beginning of 2022, active work has been carried out on the preparation of the French and Croatian Human Rights Guides, furthermore in July 2022  cooperation agreements with partner organisations were signed and development of the Guide was initiated in the Eastern Partnership countries - Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova. In these countries, the Human Rights Guide will be available online in the second half of 2023.

The Human Rights Guide is produced by the non-governmental organisation Baltic Human Rights Society in cooperation with partner organisations. It is financially supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers' Nordplus Education Programme, the European Union's Erasmus+ Programme, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia and the Active Citizens Fund, and has been granted the patronage of the Ombudsman of the Republic of Latvia and the Latvian National Commission for UNESCO.
