The 7 Best Small Slow Cookers for Entertaining, Meal Prep, and More, According to Testing

From cheesy party dips to easy weekday dinners, our favorite small slow cookers keep food consistently and perfectly warm.

Small slow cookers don’t get enough credit for being time-saving kitchen hacks. While a standard-sized slow cooker is great for a big batch of chili in the fall, a small slow cooker is far more versatile for most households, and it’s more likely that you’ll actually use it year round. There are so many benefits to these nifty countertop appliances, from keeping your favorite cheese dip perfectly melty to saving big bucks on your groceries.

“Not only does using a slow cooker cut down on time spent in the kitchen but it also helps to reduce the price of groceries—especially meat,” says nutrition expert and Cleverful Living founder Holley Grainger, MS, RD. “Cooking inexpensive, tougher cuts of meat at a low temperature over a longer period helps to break down connective tissue and fat yielding a juicy and tender product.”

Grainger says convenience, ease, and safety are three key reasons that slow cookers have been a favorite kitchen appliance for decades. “Because slow cooked meals are often prepped in the morning to be eaten at dinner, you can feel reassured that the food is cooked and held at the proper temperature to avoid any food safety issues. Families on-the-go often rely on the convenience of slow cookers to cut down on take-out meals and fast food while still being able to enjoy a nutritious home cooked meal.”

And for solo cooks or families of two, a small slow cooker or a mini slow cooker offers the convenience of the appliance without taking up too much space in the kitchen. “Small slow cookers such as the 1 to 1.5-quart models are a great option for those cooking meals for one,” says Grainer. “Whether you’re entertaining at home or bringing food to share, small slow cookers are easy to transport and will keep dips, appetizers, sides, and sauces warm.”

We tested 18 models (16 slow cookers and two food warmers) at home and carefully selected the best small slow cookers for every kitchen need, taking into consideration budget, ease of use, and heat functions.

Why You Should Get It
  • The slow cooker’s straightforward plug-and-go setup makes for no-fuss cooking.

Keep in Mind
  • There are no heat settings as it only operates on low

Crock-Pot has been synonymous with slow cookers for decades and this mini 1.5 quart slow cooker confirms the hype, as it was the only slow cooker we tested to earn a perfect score in every single category. If you’re looking for a slow cooker to plug in and walk away from, this is the unit you can depend on. Though, it’s important to note that there are no frills here. There’s not even a high heat setting. In fact, there are no settings, knobs, dials, or lights. The minimal little pot only operates on low and as soon as you plug it in, it’s on.

There are other slow cookers on this list that are cheesy dip champs. And while this unit keeps dips creamy and warm, the small size forces you to half or even quarter most dip recipes intended for a standard size slow cooker. However, it’s earned such high praise for preparing another entertaining staple: condiments. This is a sauce king. We used it to make a buttery broth with bacon and white wine to spoon over grilled clams and it was the perfect size for both preparing and serving.

And it’s also clutch for singles who live in an apartment with just a cooktop or if you don’t want to use an entire oven for one baked potato—this teeny tiny appliance steamed the best baked potato we’ve ever had.

Why You Should Get It
  • Score a dishwasher safe vessel for a fraction of the cost of others with similar size and functionality.

Keep in Mind
  • The exterior white plastic isn’t the most stylish and gets super hot.

For a budget appliance, this Brentwood slow cooker is incredibly sturdy, with dishwasher safe stoneware and a glass lid. The plastic white exterior is the only giveaway of its low price, as it’s more prone to scratches and food stains compared to stainless steel. However, we found this unit was the easiest to wipe clean both on the interior stoneware and exterior crock.

Beyond ease of use, it’s an all-around MVP and keeps both dips and dinner warm for hours without overcooking or drying out food. But while it keeps food just-right inside, the outside exterior gets extremely hot to the touch. This is likely not the best unit to have on the countertop with curious kiddos, and it’s not that travel friendly either as the small handles get super hot, too. We struggled to get a good grip when transporting this one and ended up touching the hot exterior while holding the tiny handles.

However, for weekly meal prep at home, game day dips, or keeping leftovers warm, this outperformed more expensive slow cookers in consistent heat for each setting.

Why You Should Get It
  • The shallow, oval shape makes it easier for guests to self-serve.

Keep in Mind
  • The shorter height can’t accommodate bulkier cuts of meat like other slow cookers with the same capacity.

While this Crock-Pot did cook a small amount of meat beautifully, it’s really made for sides, snacks, and desserts. The classic oval shape and shallow depth allows dishes such as dump cakes or brownies to cook evenly so no one gets a super-soggy portion from the middle. And it makes buffet dishes more accessible and easy to scoop for guests.

At 2.5 quarts it may not be large enough for holiday casseroles for big family get-togethers, but we found that even as an oval instead of a vertical cylinder it took up minimal countertop space.

If you’re looking for a potluck champ or tailgate go-to, you can’t beat this travel-friendly design. We put several slow cookers with locking lids to the test and this had the tightest seal.

The particular unit also has some of the best easy-to-grip handles that we’ve tested. Even better: We found the exterior was barely warm to the touch even when the appliance had been on for hours so there’s some piece of mind in toting this slow cooker to parties. Though, we always recommend using oven mitts for safety when using a slow cooker.

Why You Should Get It
  • This pick makes incredibly even, consistent dips—no cheese cracks or weird burnt tops here.

Keep in Mind
  • Both the interior pot and the lid are hand-wash only.

No more skimming wrinkly, burnt cheese off the top of dips and worrying about remembering to stir every 20 minutes. We found this Imusa USA slow cooker made the creamiest, most even and cohesive dip. At 1.5 quarts, it’s too small for most soup and stew recipes; however, if you don’t mind halfing or quartering a recipe from time to time, it yields tender meat and vegetables that have a just-right softness and are not total mush.

But we love this unit best for dips and sauces because it’s designed with mobility and easy storage in mind. At less than 5 pounds, we found that it can easily be picked up with one hand if needed. And the handles are surprisingly thick and sturdy for such a small appliance which is reassuring when moving a slow cooker full of molten cheese from the kitchen to a buffet spread. Or if you live in a small space and find creative–and high up–solutions for storing entertaining essentials you don’t regularly use.

Something that could be easier: cleaning. Unlike most units on our list, both the stoneware and lid are hand-wash only so it doesn’t have the ease of tossing in the dishwasher after a party. But at such a small size, we found it wipes clean quickly without any stuck-on food or burned bits on the interior walls.

Why You Should Get It
  • It’s just the right size for dinner-plus-leftovers for a couple or household of two.

Keep in Mind
  • The knob can easily be bumped, increasing the chances of accidentally changing the setting.

Slow cooker newbie? This Crock-Pot is the best choice for beginners as it earned perfect scores in both heat performance and ease of cleaning. And you can’t beat the price. At two quarts, it’s just large enough to make five servings of pulled pork, but it’s a lot easier to store in small, shallow kitchen cabinets compared to the slightly larger 2.5 quart size. The interior liner is oven-safe, too.

While this is likely too small for households with four or more, it’s just right for couples who want dinner plus leftovers. As for dips, we didn’t find any breaks or scorches and it kept cheese perfectly melty for hours. If you’re looking for a slow cooker that can prepare meals for two during the week and serve tailgate snacks for a larger crowd on the weekend, this is your buy.

However, there were a couple of missing features typically found in slow cookers at a slightly higher price such as an indicator light to confirm the appliance—or specific heat setting—is on. The knob itself is bare bones, too. We found that it only lightly clicks into place for each heat setting and can be easily bumped to a different setting, which can be problematic since the high heat setting and keep warm functions are next to each other.

Why You Should Get It
  • Handy utensil slots and lid holders make this an efficient and mess-free buffet spread for entertaining.

Keep in Mind
  • The unit is heavy and bulky which makes storage a pain.

Three slow cookers, but only one outlet plug needed. For its space-saving magic alone, the Elite Gourmet Triple Slow Cooker is one of our top choices. But it’s also incredibly handy for parties and tailgating. Each of the three oval-shaped pots holds up to 2.5 quarts and each slow cooker can operate on its own heat setting. We were impressed at how consistent the heat was for each pot, and that using one pot on high didn’t affect another on low. We tried dips, weenies, brownie desserts and more and the trio kept food perfectly warm without hot spots or scorches.

It’s more expensive than other slow cookers the same size, but the nifty design is worth the splurge. Each slow cooker pot features a slot for utensils so there’s no need to keep spoon rests. Even better: each slow cooker features a lid rest, so you don’t end up placing the lid on the counter only to realize there’s a pool of hot water or a ring of BBQ sauce to clean up.

Washing is easy, too, as each pot and lid are dishwasher safe. However, it’s worth noting that the entire unit weighs over 25 pounds when all three pots are in, so it may not be the best appliance to store on a high shelf or in a hard to reach cabinet.

Why You Should Get It
  • Enjoy soups, stews, curries and more on-the-go, even if there’s no microwave around.

Keep in Mind
  • It only keeps food warm and should not be used for cooking.

Technically, this Crock-Pot doesn’t quite qualify as it’s not actually a cooker and doesn’t come with the heat settings hot enough to safely cook food. But it impressed us so much with its food warming functionality that we had to mention it anyway. Like a traditional slow cooker, there’s a bowl and an electric heating base. We loved that this base features a cord coil perfect for keeping it tidy when not in use.

If you’re shopping for a food warmer for tailgate dips or healthy office lunches, this is one of the best, most secure appliances we’ve tested for travel. The double lid system ensures no leaks or spills, and the matte rubberized coating on the exterior doesn't feel hot to the touch. It’s also super portable at just over one pound. And the large, pop-out rubber handle makes it easy to tote from the kitchen to the dining table, especially if you have low mobility and need a tight grip.

For performance, this little lunch box was more consistent in warming food than some of the most expensive slow cookers we tested. We used it on everything from toddler food to party dips and it kept food warm for over three hours with no scorches or burns. And at 20 ounces, it’s the perfect size for packing a lunch for an adult, too.

The Bottom Line

For ease of cleaning and heat consistency, the Crock-Pot Mini 1.5-Quart Round Manual Slow Cooker checks all the boxes when it comes to ease of use and results. But for a budget buy, the Brentwood 1.5-Quart Slow Cooker is a solid option at under $25. And it’s just as easy to clean.

Our Testing Process

To find the best small slow cookers, we evaluated 16 different slow cookers and two food warmers using a predetermined methodology. We assessed each slow cooker based on five factors: value, design, ease of use, performance, and ease of cleaning. We incorporated the slow cookers into our daily cooking routines, using high, low, and keep warm settings. To evaluate the performance further, we prepared a dip in each slow cooker and monitored the low setting for two hours, noting if the dip burned and broke. Slow cookers with high heat were monitored for heat consistency and food scorches. And all slow cookers and food warmers were tested on food build-up and drips around the food vessel and heating chamber.

For evaluating the ease of cleaning, each slow cooker was hand-washed or washed in a dishwasher to see how easy it was to clean the lid and food vessel. We noted the weight for each element of the slow cooker as well as the ergonomic design of handles and other elements. After two weeks, we ranked the slow cookers in each of the five categories and a total, average score was calculated for each appliance to determine our top choices.

What to Know About Slow Cookers Before Shopping

Type

When shopping for the best small small cooker for your needs, it’s important to consider the type: manual or programmable. Manual slow cookers are much more budget friendly as they just offer straight-forward temperature settings. However a programmable slow cooker has a timer with automatic functionality such as an auto shut off after a set cook time has been completed. That comes in handy when cooking meats you don’t want to dry out or following a specific time for slow cooker desserts. A programmable slow cooker can also schedule cook times and delay cooking, which is super handy for party prep

Capacity

“[The range] in size from 1 quart to 10 quarts can make choosing the best size slow cooker for your needs feel a bit daunting,” says Grainger. “However, the average sized, most-used slow cooker ranges from 5 to 6 quarts. This size is what most slow-cooker specific recipes call for and can easily feed a family of four to six with leftovers to spare.”

You’ll note that the best small cookers have significantly lower capacities by design—0.6 quarts (20 ounces) to 2.5 quarts. These can be ideal for smaller households, or for making dips and sauces in smaller quantities than a 5 or 6-quart machine would yield. Either way, when shopping for a slow cooker, always buy one with a slightly higher capacity than what you really need, because you should never fill your slow cooker up to the brim. “Slow cookers perform best when they are half to ¾ full so be sure to adapt your recipes accordingly,” says Grainger.

Settings and Functions

Typically, even the best small slow cookers don’t have the bells and whistles that standard-sized slow cookers come with. However, most slow cookers have two heat settings—low and high—and a keep warm function. As a general rule, high heat is 300°F and low heat is 200°F. The food warming temperature varies from brand to brand but typically this function keeps food at around 150°F, which is 20 degrees hotter than the recommended temperature for food safety. However, it’s important to note that if you use a slow cooker to reheat leftovers, you’ll need to heat the food to at least 165°F first before maintaining a keep-warm setting.

Care and Maintenance

The best small slow cooker is one that will last years in your kitchen. Ensuring that it does means cleaning the appliance after each use. “Before cleaning your slow cooker, be sure it is turned off, unplugged, and has had time to cool,” says Grainger. “If the interior bowl and glass lid can be removed, wash with warm, soapy water or, if allowed by the manufacturer, wash in the dishwasher. Before storing, gently wipe down the exterior of the slow cooker with warm, soapy water and a washcloth, sponge, or rubber spatula to remove any cooked-on food making sure to avoid scouring pads and abrasive cleaners.”

Don’t want to hand wash after each use? Slow cooker liners are a game changer. “Not only do they prevent food from sticking to the inside of the crock, but they also protect the interior from scratches,” says Grainger. “Be sure to choose the correct size liner for your slow cooker and remove hot food from the pot before removing the liner. Because each style of slow cooker is different, always check the manufacturer’s instructions before cleaning.”

Other Small Slow Cookers We Tested

Crock-Pot Small 3-Quart Round Manual Slow Cooker

This 3-quart Crock-Pot is small but deep so the narrow shape was a bit challenging for bulky cuts of meat. The temperatures seemed to be a little wonky, too. The low setting was hotter than a traditional low heat and there were some scorches on the cheese dip even on the keep warm function. However, we did like the design of the handles on this unit. Unlike some slow cookers we tested, they never got hot and made it easy to grab and move the appliance.

Hamilton Beach 4-Quart Slow Cooker

While we loved the look of the stainless steel exterior on this Hamilton slow cooker, the unit was extremely hot to the touch compared to other slow cooker exteriors. Another design issue: the plastic white handles. These weren’t ergonomic and we had a tough time removing the crock. However, the slow cooker did keep meat perfectly tender and juicy and we always love to see a dishwasher safe option. Though, the appliance manual did warn against using the sanitize setting with the lid and crock—likely because of the high heat and the plastic handles.

Mainstays 2-Quart Slow Cooker

The price is right for this Mainstays slow cooker, at just under $10 bucks. And we love how lightweight and easily portable the whole unit is, but right off the bat we noticed the lid doesn’t feel as tight or secure as other slow cookers we tested. Still, it kept nacho dip perfectly melty with no burns or separation for well over two hours. And clean-up was a breeze with no drips or spills in between the pot and heating element. Even better: The pot is dishwasher safe.

Your Questions, Answered

What size slow cooker is best for one or two people?

“When cooking for one or two people, opt for a 2 to 3-quart slow cooker,” says Grainger. “While cooking larger cuts of meat like a roast may not be recommended, it is the ideal size for small meals, soups, and dips. Plus, many traditional slow cooker recipes that serve four to siz can easily be cut in half to fit into a smaller slow cooker.”

What is the smallest slow cooker I can buy?

Most mini slow cookers have a 1- to 3-quart capacity. However, there are some slow cookers and food warmers with a capacity less than 1 quart at just .65 quarts.

How much do small slow cookers cost?

Slow cookers have a wide price range, from under $10 to over $300, so it’s hard to know which to buy. Generally, small slow cookers range from $20 to $50, making them the more budget-friendly choice. We tested small slow cookers ranging from $10 to $75, and the average price of all slow cookers we tested was $46.
