On Thursday night (Dec. 3) in Minnesota, Scott Weiland died in his sleep at age 48.
Today (Dec. 4), Weiland’s former bandmates in Velvet Revolver — the group he joined after embarking on a brief solo career following his exit from Stone Temple Pilots — paid homage to their fallen comrade in a co-written note on Instagram.

“It’s just so sad and brutal from any perspective,” wrote Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum in their note. “We experienced a good chunk of life with Scott, and even in his darkest times, we all had hope and love for him. His artistry will live on, of that, there is no doubt.”
The “darkest times” they refer to are twofold, but related. Weiland’s relationship with the Guns N’ Roses ex-pats became notoriously strained while touring behind their second and final album together. Weiland acrimoniously parted ways with the band in 2008. Additionally, Weiland struggled with addiction, using both cocaine and heroin, throughout his life.
