Product Description
Teucrium hyrcanicum 'Purple Tails'Common Name: Germander.
Zone: 5 to 8.
Full sun to partial sun.
Height: 18 to 24 inches tall, spread 18 to 24 inches. Moderate growth,
Broadleaf, shrubby, woody-based, clump-forming evergreen perennial.
'Purple Tails' forms a bushy clump of aromatic, rugose, green leaves topped by bright reddish purple flower spikes on reddish purple stems from early through midsummer, and sometimes flowering later if deadheaded. 'Purple Tails' looks much like spiky Veronicas in habit and flower, but is more heat and drought tolerant plant.
Teucrium will grow in poor soils, though optimum conditions are average, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. The soil should be kept consistently moist, until established. Once established it is drought tolerant. Pinch or shear stems after flowering to promote bushy, compact growth, or leave them to grow naturally in informal spaces. Prune to about 4 inches in the spring to encourage new foliage.
Teucrium is evergreen in areas with mild winters, and should be sheltered or provided winter protection in zones 4 and 5. Divisions may be made in the spring. Use in a formal garden as a short hedge or as a space filler in borders, also in rock and herb gardens.
