Wow! And new special features as well? Curious about the length on those. I do wonder what makes it the "Ultimate Collector's Edition" though lol, just the fact that it's 3 formats together with new special features, I guess? Release date of March 12th... just not in time for Christmas!
Meanwhile, If you reside down under, Disney does not want you to own this on any format other than digital, but of course, you are very welcome to buy this, Aliens and The Abyss all at very ridicilious prices from the US or UK - if anyone was serious about being shafted by the Mouse, you would consider cutting the Disney+ from your streaming(with all the cool star wars and marvel shows or not).
Let's see what they do to it. It's rough when you need to wait to see if a James Cameron 4k UHD is going to be better than bootlegs. Even rougher when you expect them not to be.
True Lies in 4K and Atmos what a great day March 12TH is going to be I sure hope Wal-Mart will carry them in store because best buy by then will have stopped movies and who knows if Amazon will deliver them on release day of if they do what time I will get them. So my only hope is wally world in store.
Of course, this is brilliant news! But that cover art is shocking. Arnie is NOT left handed (his gun is in the wrong hand) and what's going on with his right arm? There is bad artwork, and then there is.... this!
Well, people begged - and now they are coming! This was basically a forgotten about film and a lost Arnold film. You could also argue that it help bring his career down too. They say that 911 made this scarce. Ah well.
Now let's have "Executive Action" at least on blu-ray.
Was the film originally in Dolby Digital or DTS when it came out?
I wonder if the 5.1 mix on the Blu-ray is an original theatrical mix... Or if the 2.0 audio is also an original Dolby Stereo mix.
^^ Their conditioning does not work on me. I have not spent a single dollar on digital purchases. If the film is not on a disc and I cannot put it on my shelf, I do not spend money. This isn't going to change in our house -- like ever.
@Hydra Spectre - True Lies was originally in DTS Digital Sound during it's theatrical exhibition, otherwise it was also in Dolby Digital SR. That's why I'm favoring the standard Blu.
@pro-bassoonist: he doesn't mean digital movie purchases... he's referring to a whack-o conspiracy theory. Also, apparently he doesn't understand the meaning of the phrase "come to Jesus moment".
Hope the picture hasn't been DNR'd to death. Best to wait for the reviews of this wave of Cameron releases.
I almost gave up hope that this would ever get a HD physical release. Will be happy to buy this and The Abyss and add them to my collection. Two of the biggest titles I've been waiting for a blu-ray release for a long, long time.
My most wanted movie on physical media for like the last 10 years! Absolutely best news of 2023 for physical media along The Abyss and Titanic. Thank you Mr. Cameron, you have come through and delivered the trifecta.
YESSSSSS! Our wallets are going to be hurting come March, but totally WORTH it! I just preordered Titanic on 4K and might even give Avatar another try. I enjoyed it when I watched it years ago, but it felt like a one time watch movie.
Between this and The Abyss getting new physical releases, all we need now is Disney to release "Strange Days" and the wish list will have the boxes ticked! This is exciting! Granted, I don't have any 4k hardware but the Blu-ray is a new remaster and that's good enough!
nope , certainly and most absolutely not buying this , small sound mix near field or my THX cinema , i keep the dts laserdisc theatrical mix
4k no longer care for the format , i rather spend the money on cat food or laserdisc now , 4k has let me down , i no longer trust the format by billion dollar studios for cash cow money grabbing ,, keep it disney fox studios
I did not comment about Titanic on 4K Blu-ray even though that is my all-time favorite James Cameron movie (was busy doing other things). But awesome to have True Lies coming on the 4K Blu-ray format. The last time I saw this movie was around 20 years ago as a D-VHS D-Theater rental movie in 1080i with lossy 5.1 DTS sound at 1.54Mbps.
Now an official native 4K Dolby Vision HDR release with lossless 13.1 Dolby Atmos soundtrack. Thanks again James Cameron and Disney. All of a sudden, all these Cameron movies are being re-released. I wonder what is going on. Whatever is happing it is really awesome.
Just recently watched this twice with different friends and it still holds up and the end scene with the plane and crane is still one of the great action scenes. But what is going on with Disney+ ? First Doctor Who and now Cameron's works. Sad for us south of the equator, as I don't stream, download etc, only like watching blu-rays but and it appears Disney+ want us to pay. Well I still have my DVD version and it still looks great, I guess I'll just have to keep it...
I had a good friend who would love to have True Lies in 4K, and I would never blame him. But for me, I can only see this film as a comedy, because some of its content is notoriously racist. At any rate, I had plans to order the Spanish Blu-Ray edition, but I am glad I didn't.
I am pleasantly surprised that Disney is releasing Abyss and True Lies in 4K. Although it is a burden to import them, but quite worthy. The THX (?) DVD of The Abyss is filled with poor picture quality, barely watchable. We had True Lies on DVD, but it was a much better transfer so far. Surely, not on a par with a decent Blu-Ray release, although I don't remember why this movie was never contemplated for Blu-Ray, let alone 4K.
I believe that Disney has done a good job with those transfer, given that both movies were eagerly waited by collectors. Dolby Atmos and HDR are a welcome improvement.
Well, so much for Cameron's claim back in August that this would be coming out for Christmas of this year. Honestly, tired of waiting for catalog to street in any format beyond DVD. True Lies, The Abyss, the original unaltered Star Wars trilogy, Six Weeks, Star!, Porgy and Bess, Centennial Summer, The Talk of the Town, Random Harvest, etc. etc. etc. Hollywood continues to jerk its audience around and then wonder why 4K/Blu-ray sales are in a slump. Really?!?!
Smh, I still cant believe this movie never made to Blu. I know this carry that Disney name. But i hope WE don't have to turn the Volume up to 12 just to hear it... This would make a perfect Xmas gift. At least i still hav my Laserdisc Speacial Edition boxset....
"No “T2 4K wax figure look”, super fine grain. True Lies looks similar to the 4K transfers of Star Trek: First Contact, Deep Impact, Star Trek Insurrection and The Truman Show which are all of the same era using Kodak Vision 500T 5279 which are fast stocks designed to reduce grain"
I'm trying to find confirmation if both "True Lies" and "The Abyss" will have separate Blu-ray releases. Someone posted a press release for "The Abyss" on Facebook and it only lists 2 SKU's, one for digital, and the other for the 4K/Blu combo pack. I've not yet adopted the 4K format and and am hoping Disney plays to put out separate Blu-ray releases for these.
It’s hilarious that after all these years of “Where’s The Abyss?”, “Where’s True Lies?” and “Where’s Aliens?” that they’re all coming out and streeting the same day. Genius! What a great day to be a physical media collector.
Didn't think I'd live to see the day of this getting an official Blu-ray/4K release. Hopefully the inevitable teal grade is not egregious, some film grain is left intact, and Cameron doesn't go full-on T2 3D/4K mode where he wants to digitally "fix" all the visible stunt doubles.
Pivotal moments in history:
1. Invention of electricity
2. The discovery of the Titanic (see what I did there?)
3. True Lies with Jamie Leigh Curtis dancing in her undies in 4K clarity.
Damn, what a time to be alive lol. Question though; I haven't purchased a Disney UHD in a while, are they still putting out less than satisfactory audio mixes?
Honestly, the lack of Dolby Vision shouldn't matter too much. If you compare the Dolby Vision stream vs the physical disk on The Way of Water the HDR10 knocks the streams socks off in my opinion.
To all of those who maybe didn't read the entire press release yesterday, ALL six of these JC movies come with Dolby Vision, including the two Avatar re-releases.
This is incredible! Finally all of Cameron’s oeuvre (aside from Piranha 2, but who cares) will have proper high definition, or UHD in this case, home releases! It took awhile, but the flower that blooms late is usually the most beautiful. I am getting this and my beloved The Abyss same day. And I might swing for Aliens as well, especially if they can give an upgraded Dolby Vision release to the first one to match, but maybe I shouldn’t hold my breath and just be grateful we’re finally getting The Abyss and True Lies after what most certainly seems like too long a wait. Bring it on!!
Im a little bit disappointed that the disc edition is released 3 months after the streaming versions.
Would be nice to enjoy this during the upcoming holidays……
People got what they wanted, all I want is the first Terminator in 4K. Just as it was. If they need to 'update' the stop-motion with CGI - fine, just make sure to include both versions on two separate discs.
I will never forget my experience of seeing this film at my local cinema -- or my reaction to Tom Arnold's heavyset character kissing that pole after all of the bullets miss him! Seriously, thank God for physical media! Movies were incredible in the '90s! These days, the only big-budget action movies that we are given feature a bunch of people in rubber suits punching and kicking C.G.I. aliens. True Lies to the rescue
Can't wait to own this, Aliens and Abyss on 4k. Since this will come out in March, Best Buy probably wont be an option to purchase movies at this time. Amazon is so meh to me. So where are you guys going to be purchasing your movies? Maybe this will be in on that disney movie club?
My thoughts,Disney is taken a hit with their movies not being huge block busters and the writers strike,so they went to the vault, dusted off the pike of $$$ they were sitting on and are about to strike gold!
CharmCityCharmer, agreed on Strange Days ....
... THAT kind of news would be waaaayyyyy better .....
... Cameron's first wife is a superior director and the proof is in the pudding ....
I haven't seen "True Lies" in several years, but I may pick this up when it comes out. I remember it being a mostly fun movie, with some mature elements thrown in for older audiences.
@krismate since around the end of last year Disney's mostly been improving with their Atmos and DTS tracks. Haven't really heard reports of limited bass, range, or volume since some of the UHDs/BDs from last year, and from my (and others') experiences their 2023 stuff sounded pretty damn good. Only major exception was Nightmare Before Christmas 4K's DTS 7.1 track seeming to be encoded improperly in a way that made it come out as ear-and-speaker-damagingly loud white noise when played on a PS5, but that ended up getting fixed in a PS5 firmware update anyway.
Just watched my DVD of this movie a week ago. It's a hoot and holler of fun and action but it is also so politically incorrect. I'm still sceptical that it will actually be released because I expect the "aware" people (we know who they are) will be out in force in the winter months on social media and in person demonstrations in front of stores selling it demanding that it be withdrawn. The stores and online toadies will unfortunately comply.
“Unaware” folks (we know who they are… the fylfot gives them away) are so paranoid these days.
This will be released with zero protest. Everyone loves a great movie.
