Worcester’s own Alicia Witt is coming home for New Year's. The actress and singer, who’s appeared on television shows such as “Friday Night Lights,” “Cybill,” and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” and in movies such as “Two Weeks Notice” and “The Upside of Anger,” will show off her singing and songwriting skills at Mechanics Hall as part of the city’s First Night celebration. Witt checked in with us on Thursday to talk about the show and to confirm her special guest for the night: Ben Folds. The Ben Folds Five frontman (and judge on “The Sing Off”) will play bass for Witt during her set. “It’s not as well known about him,” Witt said, of Folds, who’s usually behind a piano. “He’s also the most amazing drummer that you’ve probably ever heard.” Witt said she met Folds through a musician friend in Nashville. Witt and Folds have now played and written songs together — and they also happen to be dating. She opened for him at Brixton Academy in London, and the duo came up with a song for the closing credits of Witt’s recent movie, “Pasadena,” in which she stars with Cheryl Hines and New Hampshire’s Wilson Bethel (son of New England writer Joyce Maynard). Witt says she and Folds will probably play their “Pasadena” song during Monday night’s show. She said she didn’t quite believe that he’d be joining her onstage until he told his fans. “I honestly wasn’t 100 percent sure he was serious until he tweeted it.”
