Sandra Bernhard brings her new show “Sandemonium” to the new City Winery on Jan. 19.Jordan Graham

Comedian, actress, and author Sandra Bernhard loves to travel and is excited to be taking her show “Sandemonium,” which debuted in New York over the holidays, to select cities in the United States (including Boston, at the new City Winery, on Jan. 19) and internationally. “I love Boston and don’t get up there enough,” said Berhnard, 62, a native of Flint, Mich., who lives in New York City with her longtime girlfriend, Sara Switzer. Bernhard, who has a 19-year-old daughter, Cicely, is enjoying her third year hosting “Sandyland” on SiriusXM
Radio’s Radio Andy channel, spearheaded by Andy Cohen. From 1991 to 1996 she played Nancy Bartlett — the first openly gay character on a network sitcom — on “Roseanne.” We caught up with Bernhard to talk about all things travel.

Favorite vacation destination? I would have to say London. It’s the perfect place to start a European vacation, since you can get anywhere after a great time seeing theater, visiting the countryside, and drinking tea.

Favorite food or drink while vacationing? It’s hard to narrow it down. I love good Italian, Chinese, Indian, and Middle Eastern food. I am an adventurous eater, but everything has to start with high-quality produce, free-range meat, and sustainably sourced fish.

Where would you like to travel to but haven’t? India and Thailand. It just hasn’t worked into my schedule, but I am going to make it happen as soon as I can.

One item you can’t leave home without when traveling? My Herban Essentials oil towelettes to wipe down my seat on the plane.

Aisle or window? Aisle always because I would rather have someone climb over me to use the bathroom than me climbing over someone.

Favorite childhood travel memory? Driving to Miami from Flint, Mich., with my parents and two brothers when I was 5. There was a Santa Claus walking on the beach handing out candy canes.

Guilty pleasure when traveling? Staying in a great hotel. I just can’t have it any other way.

Best travel tip? Try your best to get your mileage on one airline. It really helps with early boarding and easier bookings.
