Description
This majestic large beech tree has bright and coppery-red leaves when young that mature to a deep purple as the summer progresses, turning deep orange to copper in autumn.  Its bark is smooth, thin and grey and quite often has horizontal markings.  Although deciduous the leaves generally stay on the tree well into winter.

Planting Position
Best grown in full sun and semi-shade.  This tree needs to be planted in good, fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It doesn't do well in heavy clay or light sand.

Attributes
This is a very versatile tree.  It's delightful grown as a specimen tree but also a perfect solution for hedging or as a shrub.  It is wildlife friendly providing food and shelter for birds and hibernating mammals as it retains its leaves all winter until the new growth starts in spring. The stunning dark purple foliage makes it a great contrast in the landscape.
