Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have been married for over 15 years, which, in Hollywood terms, is roughly equivalent to 50 years. But despite their long, dedicated relationship and successful careers in the spotlight, the two manage to keep their private life, well, very private. Still, whenever they do post about each other on social media or attend a red carpet event together, it’s pretty clear that they were made for each other. From their sweet first meeting to the struggles they’ve faced together, here’s what you need to know about Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s relationship.

  • Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban first met in 2005 and quickly fell for each other.
  • In June 2006, the two got married in a romantic ceremony in Australia.
  • Just a few months later, the newlyweds hit a rough patch when Nicole had to set up an intervention for Keith's addiction.
  • The couple has two children: daughter, Sunday Rose, birthed by Nicole in 2008 and daughter, Faith Margaret, born via surrogate in 2011.

January 15, 2005: First Meeting

About four years after divorcing Tom Cruise in 2001, Nicole met Keith at the 2005 G’Day USA gala. It was as close to love at first sight as it gets, but neither of them thought the other person was interested. In 2017, Nicole told Ellen DeGeneres, “I remember thinking, I had such a crush on him, and he wasn’t interested in me.”

Meanwhile, Keith explained his side on The Oprah Winfrey Show, saying, “I swear to you, she glided across the room, floated. I don’t know how she did it. It was out of this world and there was a split moment where she wasn’t with anybody, and I thought, ‘I’ll just go up and say hi.’” He went on to say they “really clicked” once they started talking, although Nicole maintains that he didn’t call her for four more months.

June 20, 2006: The Moment Nicole Knew He Was the One

By her 38th birthday in 2006, Nicole knew that she wanted to marry Keith. She told People that she figured it out when he surprised her on her birthday by standing on her stoop in New York at 5 a.m. holding gardenias. She said, “That is when I went, ‘This is the man I hope I get to marry.’” She went on to say that the two went on a trip to Woodstock, New York, adding, “It was pretty intense. I believed by that point he was the love of my life. Maybe that’s because I am deeply romantic, or I’m an actress, or I have strong faith as well, but I just believed, ‘Oh, okay, here he is.’”

June 25, 2006: A Wedding in Australia

The two made things official when they tied the knot during a romantic wedding ceremony in Manly, Australia. The guest list included celebrities like Russell Crowe, Baz Luhrmann, Naomi Watts, Hugh Jackman, and a performance by Crowded Hour singer Neil Finn.

October 2006: Keith Goes Into Treatment for Addiction

Their marriage was tested only a few months after their wedding ceremony when Nicole had to stage an intervention for Keith, who went on to get treatment for addiction and spent three months at an in-patient facility (he had already completed two stays in rehab before that). Speaking to Rolling Stone in 2016, Keith said, “I caused the implosion of my fresh marriage. It survived, but it’s a miracle it did.” He attributed his success in rehab to Nicole, saying, “For the first time in my life, I could shake off the shackles of addiction.”

She said, “I wish I could have met [Keith] much earlier and had way more children with him, but I didn’t. I mean, if I could have had two more children with him, that would have been just glorious.”

In 2014, Nicole’s father passed away, and Nicole told Ellen DeGeneres that Keith was there to help her get through the loss. “He has been so good to me for nine years, but for the last sort of month—which has been a really tough time for me—when you have your partner who just literally carries you through a tough time, he’s been amazing to me,” she said. “To have my husband to step up in that way, it makes me cry. He’s amazing. I will keep him. I’ll do anything for that man.”
