Fred Childers

Fred Childers has 18 years of broadcast journalism experience and is currently the anchor and managing editor for Fox 44 News at 9, and the political reporter for WVLA Local 33 News.

As political reporter Fred is excited to move to the Capital City, where all of the political action happens.

Before joining WVLA and WGMB Fred was a reporter for a station in Shreveport Louisiana where he spent 11 years as a reporter and backup anchor, covering breaking news, criminal courts and politics.

In 2009 he was awarded Reporter of the Year by the Louisiana Broadcaster’s Association.

Fred’s most memorable coverage: Hurricane Katrina. He spent 13 days in and around New Orleans covering the hurricane’s arrival and the devastating floods that followed. He provided live reports to Louisiana and for stations all across the country.

Childers started his career in Wichita Falls, Texas in 1998, working for the CBS affiliate, KAUZ TV as a reporter and weekend anchor.

In the 90’s Childers went to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville Texas, where he studied broadcast journalism. It was there he discovered his passion for television news when he got hands on experience reporting for the school’s news show on Cable Channel 7. He would eventually become the station manager. He considers his 18 years in the business that would follow as very fulfilling, exciting, and rewarding. Fred likes to run, and has discovered the beautiful jogging path at LSU Lake, (cheer him on if you see him, he needs all the help he can get!) He and his wife Allison love experiencing new restaurants and are excited to try all that Cajun flavor Baton Rouge has to offer. They have three dogs: Maggie Mae, De Oro, and Cocoa, that keep them entertained.
